I live in a dry climate, so I never dreamed that this would be such a big issue. I took out my long guns today, and 2 of them have a couple of rust specks on them. Easily polished... But my SKS is covered in rust! I managed to polish most of it off with cloth, but the operating rod and operating rod chamber are really bad. I should be able to get it all fixed up, but how can I prevent this in the future? I clean them about once every 2 months or after a couple of range trips... No gun safe, they are kept locked and 'hidden' in the closet. Thanks! :banghead:

Coat the guns with a product called RIG, (rust inhibiting grease).
You can get it from Brownells http://www.brownells.com and a couple other places.
Light film is all that is needed.'
Renew the coating every three months to be safe and don't store the guns in any kind of gun case.
We just did an insurance replacement value write up for five high quality long guns that were stored in an attic in cases and unprotected for a little more than five years.
Every one of those guns were destroyed beyond salvage, they were rusted up that bad.
A 7mm Magnum Browning BAR was so corroded the forearm wood crumbled to dust during the appraisal.
Get some RIG and remember to clean it off with regular gun cleaner before firing the weapon, especially get the grease out of the bore.

A good way to remove rust with minimal damage to the finish is "Sheath" rust preventative and 0000 steel wool.

Corrosive ammo? Possible I suppose. I've pretty much only fired wolf ammo out of it. Maybe I'll start giving it a hardcore cleaning every time I'm done at the range.
