I recently acquired a WW2 38 Short Colt, and have had very little success finding load data. Any hept would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks
Dan

Sarge, Thanks for the info, The Ammo that 1) was in it, and 2) came with it, says very plainly on the case "38 Short Colt". It is a Clone (Made by Albion) as I understand it, under contract with Enfield. Pics Attached

Did the previous owner just use the 38 Short Colts due to lower recoil/availability? What should I look for 38 Short Colt or 38 S&W?

Are you sure it's a 38 Short Colt and not a 38 S&W? 38 S&W equals British 38/200. I've never heard of a wartime Enfield in 38 Short Colt. It wouldn't make sense as the 38/200 was the std revolver round.

What caliber markings are there on the gun?

.38 Short Colt (case dia .37 measured on one of my cases) (marked on the rim 38 SH Colt) can be used in the 38 S&W (case dia .38 measured on one of my cases) (Marked on the rim 38 S&W) even though the case is slightly smaller as is the bullet. You really want a box of .38 S&W.

38 Special cases are way to long and are marked on the rim 38 SPL

38 S&W is much more available than 38 Short Colt. It will shoot lower as its a 140-150 gr bullet vs the 200 gr bullet the British used. The bullets are also bigger (like .360 or so). Some have gotten good results using 38 spl hbwc or a soft swaged bullet.

SG Ammo usually has this ammo available. I shoot the Prvi ammo in my Webley with good results.

My Enfield is chambered in .38 S&W and I load for the Enfield.

I use a 170gr flat nose bullet sometimes but I also load 38/200 ammo (Lyman #358430) and of course 145gr LRN bullet too.

I'm using Starline brass and a 145gr Missouri Bullets bullet.

I'm using a charge of between 2.5gr W231/HP-38 and crimp into the manufacturers supplied crimp groove.

Guys, as usual, you have opened my eyes. I will pursue the 38 S&W avenue. I was prepared to cut down some 38 Spl brass, but now think I will pursue the 38 S&W route.

Thanks again
I love this Forum...

English made WWII revolvers whether Enfield, Albion, or Webley were chambered for the .380/200 military round. That cartridge has the same dimensions as the .38 S&W case but used a 200 grain (later a 180 FMJ bullet) at about 650 fps. NONE of them were chambered for .38 Short Colt. However, one CAN shoot .38 short colt ammo in one of these revolvers. The correct ammo is similar to the .38 S&W "New Police" cartridge with a 200 grain lead bullet.
