My dad has had this pistol for as long as I can remember, Im 56. Can anyone tell me what model it is? I always thought it was a challenger but not positive. I think there is something wrong with the firing pin it sometimes fires on the first pull of the trigger and sometimes won’t fire the round even after several strikes from the firing pin. Any ideas?

I think it's a Browning Challenger II or III (can't tell the difference between the two).
As for the firing pin, it could be that its channel is very dirty or there is oil/grease in the channel or the firing pin has a worn or blunt tip or the firing pin spring has lost its strength and needs to be replaced with a new one.

Keep in mind though that the .22L.R. is a cartridges prone to misfiring. Before working on the firing pin, try shooting quality ammunition. In my experience, the most reliable in terms of ignition are the Fiocchi and the CCI. The worst are the Remington. However, a deep and thorough cleaning of the slide, where the firing pin is located, before the next range trip could help.

I would put a small squirt of carb. cleaner into the firing pin channel.if there is crud in there the cleaner should dissolve it.
