I want to start by saying hello to everyone, I am new to this site this is my first post. Its nice to talk to people who understand firearm enthusiasts. Too bad I can't say the same about my fiance, she just doesn't understand, though she is slowly coming around. Anyway I was wondering what you guys, and gals maybe, think would be a good addition to my very small and growing collection. I own two firearms, Mossberg 500 tac and a Sig P226 tac. I was thinking a rifle would be a good choice but I'm torn between all the different models. What would you suggest for a high budget, and also suggestions for a low budget. Maybe a shtf rifle? let me know what you think. -Thanks
*** to clear confusion I am looking for a semi auto "assault" type rifle. what are your opinions on some good solid models?

That's pretty vague. What are you interested in doing? I mean, it's easy to say "Big budget: 600 NE double rifle " and "low budget: Mosin Nagant." Are you interested in hunting, target shooting, plinking, just having a rifle so you can gaze at it longingly?

Hi, and Welcome to THR!

You need to give more info about your plans for the rifle.

Usually people suggest a .22 as a first rifle. That does not qualify as a SHTF gun, though. Are you planning on doing any hunting with it? Just plinking? Do you want iron sights or a scope? Do you want a military caliber, or anything? Do you want a bolt action, semi-auto, etc?

So if you want an "assault rifle" (which isn't really), you'll most likely be looking at a semi-auto in a military caliber.

The two most popular contenders would be an AR15 or AK variant.

If you wanted more of a "battle rifle" then you could add M1A, G3, FAL, AR10, etc. to the list. Those typically would be in a larger chambering like .308.

An assault rifle will run you into the $10,000-25,000 range, if you could buy one in your state, which you can not. If you would be willing to move there might be more options.
