Greetings everyone! I am going to go on a trip and I will be passing through several states, but New Mexico is the only one that I am unsure about. I am a SD resident with a SD (basic) concealed carry permit, but it seems that reciprocity is nil.

So... my question. Can I open cary being not a resident of NM? Can I carry a loaded firearm in the vehicle with me? If not, does it need to be locked up or anything? Or, does NM happen to have a provision for concealed carry without a permit?

I already tried searching on the web, but my google-fu seems to be a bit rusty. If you can answer any of these questions, please post a link to another authority.

Or, if you can tell me where to look, I am not opposed to looking myself.
Thanks all!

Just make sure that you don't open carry in any place that sells alcohol, including gas stations. Your vehicle is considered an extension of your home, so you can carry both open or concealed there.

Wondering why SD isn't honored by NM, since it appears from handgunlaw.us that NM is honored by SD.

Thanks all! The reciprocity thing... on the SD government website it said that there was no reciprocity with NM. On the NM gov website it said that there was no reciprocity with SD. However, these were relatively dated sites, so something could have updated and they forgot to update the particular page that I looked at! Also, because SD has two types of permit, it can be confusing.

I probably won't need to stop for gas in NM.

That should be all for me! Thanks.

^He might just be cutting a corner around the 4 Corners! :D

Otherwise I was thinking like you. Been there many times and it is a very big, beautiful state!

Chaco Culture, New Mexico.

Or... I have a 42 gallon fuel tank. My Suburban goes 500 miles before I NEED to stop (for gas, leaving at least some reserve), although stopping for stretching the lower limbs might encourage me to stop for gas!
