Guys on my newly acquired 19-4 ,I took off the hogue grips to put on some altamonts I just ordered but When I took off the hogue I see this sticky resin on the gun where the grips had it covered before. Anyone know of how I can take off the intruder? Keep in mind the gun is in a nickel finish so anything that can minimize any finish damage is highly appreciated.

It's probably just congealed oil,,,

It's probably just congealed dried out oil,,,
I've seen this on several of my handguns & rifles.

Just spray some CLP on it,,,
Give it a few minutes then wipe it off with a rag.

I don't know how you can stand the smell of Ballistol. I agree that it's probably just dried up oil of some kind or some one refinished the original stocks and put them on an oily frame and it mixed.

Alcohol

Get the kind that if it doesn't work on the gun goo ,you can still drink it !

I like the smell of Ballistol. I use it on my guns, Leather in my Car, and I spray it on the hardwood floor in my Dining Room. I then wipe the floor with a old T-Shirt and it looks great for months. The smell doesn't last very long.

Alcohol works on very few oils. There's a fancy chemical reason for it involving the difference between polar and non polar solvents. But basically if using alcohol the thing that mostly removes the gunk is the elbow grease involved.

Regular "low odor paint thinner" as used in oil based house paint and some enamel paints works like a charm and is super cheap to boot.

This is also a case where regular ol' much maligned WD-40 shines. The gentle solvents in the WD will dissolve the congealed oil just great and let you wipe it away.
