I bought a mossberg model 500 the other day and I shot about 15 rounds the day I got it and 35 the next but now it has a failure to fire nearly every time I usually have to run the same cartridge thru the gun twice before fires

Did you give it a thorough cleaning before shooting it? If, not, sounds like it might have some of rust preventative gunk in the firing pin area. Your owner's manual will show you how to get in there to give a good cleaning. I find brake cleaner to do a great job, but then remember to spray something like Remoil afterwards as brake cleaner takes everything off

Also check that the screw at the end of the magazine that retains the barrel is tight, and that the barrel is fully inserted into the receiver.

^this.

The Saturday after Christmas I was at the range to shoot skeet, and there were a bunch of guys there who obviously got shotguns for Christmas. Several pumps and a few autoloaders. A couple of guys were having cycling problems; they'd either fail to eject, short cycle and get stovepipes and failures to feed new shells, or failures to fire. One was a pump, the other an autoloader (I didn't pay attention to brand, but the pump did look like a Mossy 500). We helped them field strip the guns and look them over, and once we reassembled them and made sure the barrels were fully seated and the retaining nut was good and tight, they had no further issues.

What Mikejack said and check the safety for looseness as well.
