Looking to trade for a new Henry 357/38 lever action rifle, octagon barrel w/brass rec. Beautiful gun, but would like to hear any experience with the Henry rifles. Any thoughts?

Man A friend of mine has one and they are great rifles. Well made, they stabilize heavier bullets better, they are proofed with extremely heavy .44 Magnum Loads, they are accurate. The receiver is not pure brass, it is an alloy that is just as strong as a steel unit, the design of the action is so much like a marlin I am surprised they have never been any legal action (LOL). Also they are made in the USA and are all built in house in Brooklyn NY.

I would message the man himself

That's right, Anthony Imperiato (the owner) himself answers these emails and he is VERY friendly and will work with you to make sure you get the rifle you want.

I love Marlin, but a very close second is Henry.

What? You've got to be kidding me! Henry makes a better product than Marlin by far. I've owned both and would take the Henry hands down any day.

Sorry Bill, I have had nothing but great luck with Marlin, and for field use, I think your better off with the Marlin Product... I'd hate to scratch up a nice Henry Rifle.

Plus Marlin has them in Stainless... And I like Stainless Lever guns...

Not that I feel my post knocked the Henry at all...

let's see...

one weighs 6 pounds and has a loading gate for much faster topping off. the other weighs over 8.5 pounds and requires you to retract the mag tube spring in order to reload.

i like the looks of the henry and would be interested in possibly owning one at some point. but given the choice of only one, definitely give me the marlin.

yes i own one (1894 cowboy with octagonal barrel).

I am suprised anyone likes a Henry over a Marlin. It sounds like Henry's are good but they seem like toys when compared to a Marlin. I have always found Marlins to be perfect in every way.

MAke no mistake, Henry makes a damn fine weapon... damn fine. But as a matter of preference I like my Marlins...

What are you guys all talking about? Henry .22s? Those are totally different rifles, whatever one thinks of them.

The Big Boy is just that: a big boy. It's a very heavy rifle. If you want a very heavy pistol-caliber lever gun, I'm sure they're well-made. My latest scoped .30-06 weighs a pound less. The Henry is likely a great choice for CAS, where the rifle is seldom carried more than a few yards, and heavier weight helps with offhand rapid-fire shooting.

The quality of Henry rifles is unsurpassed, even by Marlin. And, BTW, I've owned and given away 4 of them to my sons as Christmas and birthday gifts. I currently own a Henry H001 and LOVE it. IMHO, it's the best lever action 22 on the market.

I racked the action of a Big Boy yesterday, it's smooth that's for sure. On the heavy side, but feels really good. Are they as hardy as the Marlins? One more question, are the receivers machined out of steel?

As I said earlier, the "brass receivers" are an alloy. The Steel ones are milled from bar-stock. Now Bill, I am not disagreeing with you, but Marlins are a little lighter, and a little stouter... not that 99% of shooters would ever tax a Henry Action (Which is the same design as a 1895 Marlin), but still... the Henry Big Boy is the same weight as my MAS 49-56, a Cold War Era Main Battle Rifle.

I do think, no I KNOW the Henry has a better finish then my Marlins (Although my 1895CB is awful nice), but the Marlins seem more utilitarian.

After a little more thought and research, I have to admit that I agree with you. Thanks for setting me straight. :)
