Hey Folks,

Sorting through some components I was fortunate enough to receive from a friend and found a couple 1 lbs bottles of Herco (In tote with two MEC shotgun presses). Can't find any non-shotgun data for this powder in my manuals. The relative burn rate seems to be in the same ballpark as Universal, Unique and WSF. Is there something about this powder's characteristics that cause it to not be viable for use in handgun loads?

Thanks all

Not at all. Mfg is promoting their newer pistol specific powders. Try Alliant 2004 tor pistol data. Info's out there, but you'll need to do some digging.

I use Herco in my replica of the 38/200. A 200 gr Hemispherical round nose bullet (From Matt's Bullets) in a 38S&W (not Special) case. The bullet is longer than the empty cartridge. Herco pushes it out of my Webley as a blistering 600 FPS.

Alliant has older data for Herco in most pistol carts.
Which calibers where you interested in and I can snip the data and paste it for you

Thanks! I would be looking at 40 S&W, 44 Special and 44 Mag.

Alliant 2002 data (Alliant 2005 is the same, my 2005.pdf is not as sharp)

Max charges listed, reduce 10% to start per Alliant
(if you zoom in your browser it is easier to read)

Hope this helps.
(if you look in Resources here on THR Livelife uploaded the 2004 Allaint .pdf of data)

I like Herco a lot in 357 mag with 158 jacketed, and it’s my favorite in 40s&w with 165 and 180.
I think it’s just a touch slower than Unique
