Here it comes....again.

Part of the After Action Reports we generated (colleted TexDoT, DPS, et al) after the Rita debacle were depressing.

Houston put a six "zone" system after Katrina based on certain zip codes based on those zip codes' elevation above MSL.

The media types whipped up a frenzy, and people just started evac-ing without regard to whether they were in a Mandatory or Recommended evac zone at all. Which meant that contra-flow had to be set up 24-36 hours ahead of schedule. Which created an entire set of problems of its own.

Turns out, almost none of the people evac-ing had any idea where Huntsvlle, Texas was, or how much gasoline would be needed to get there (about 55-75 miles from the Houston metro area). None of the interviewed out of gas folks had a map., most had left town with "about" $4 worth of gasoline. Equally complicated, none of the first responder vehicles had fuel, or knew where to get any (which emergency managment people did correct, afterwards).

There were some carjackings, but most wound up unsuccessful in the traffic congestion. It was also mitigated by the number of people who knew back roads and the like. Although the ones who went east were taking themselves closer to the track of Rita.

The folks in Austin came back and wanted to know what impact there would have been if there were a lot of CHL holders in the evacuee stream. Having to find a way to explain, in words of less than one syllable to political types that there were tens of thousands of firearms in the evacuee stream, whether legal or not, and none of the first responders were going to much care, unless the arm became an issue, was more than passing complicated.

Well Finally!

Sorry I have been out, but No internet since the storm got even with Cedar Key. We lost power for 41 hours of which I ran the Generatore about 12 hours in snatches of one to two hours. Noramally zero degree F freezer got up to 20 F at one point. Once both Freezer and refridge eh shut down (refridge ran longer most times oddly) I would shut down for about three hours.

Only gun related issue..... inside of truck got a little damp so I have opened the truck safe and cleaned the "truck gun" and dried out the foam in the safe. Looked fine, but hey it was about due anyway.

Oh yeah also checked out the kids on daughter's High Standard Double Nine style .22 revolver the afternoon before the storm, just to make them feel better. The only shot CB shorts from seven meters, but made me happy as well.

Anyhow all is well in the Swamp now that the internet is back at our place.

My church got in 18 tons of relief supplies which we detrucked, stacked and cataloged Sunday after sacrament. Some folks claimed the fire bucket style lines made for the best Sunday School Class we have had in a long time. Kids from about 8 to a 90 year old in that line. Last night we delivered about a third of it to local food banks, other denomination churches (hey its not a competition, folks) and the local Ronald MacDonald House. Good excuse to have the kids clean Dad's F-150 which did get put to use. I had a load of Peanut butter, powdered milk, Brand name dry cereal and wet whipes and assorted canned fruit loaded to just over the bed sides. Great Wednesday activity night!

I live in Seattle Washington and whenever I open carry I am frowned upon by people. I don't like scaring anyone or upsetting people so I conceal instead.

I love OC but I hate stirring the pot. I try to influence people by being a kind, generous person that others can look up to while being open about my love of guns and gun ownership. I find displaying the gun is just too scary, but CCW and a big mouth win people over.

Glad you're back on the net, kBob. I figure you and your wife came out well.

During the lead up to, during, and after the storm over here a few weeks ago, I just conceal carried like usual.

I really should get another stainless carry gun or two. It seems that I never think about it until I get soaking wet. :)
