Just purchased a Rough Rider, 6.5"...yeah, I know, but I needed a cheap barn gun:D Anyway, with the chamber empty, the hammer falls from the 4th position whether the "hammer block" lever is up or down. Is that normal? I haven't tried it with a cartridge yet to see if it will still fire with the hammer block up.

Not that I need a safety for a single action revolver anyway.... But just wondering if it's working as it should.

Yes, that's entirely normal.

The hammer block prevents the hammer from hitting the firing pin, it does not prevent the hammer from moving at all.

Yep, that's normal. It's unnerving to those of us skittish about safety, kind of like the little shudder I even get when I use the decocker lever on a DA/SA semi-automatic to drop the hammer without also thumb-guiding it.

I'm sure you know not to be dry-firing that thing. I cannot comment on whether or not it's safe to dry-fire with the safety "on", but I would not trust it, as that's not what it was intended for.

That being said, I'd be willing to bet you'll find that gun fun to handle and shoot, especially if you don't already have a single-action rimfire. I like mine quite a bit.

Thanks for the info. Yes, I know better than to dry fire regularly...don't need a dinged cylinder. I was just familiarizing myself with the controls. I'd take it out to play today, but we're in the middle of a blizzard here.

I have a stainless Single Six and a stainless Bearcat...and enjoy them. But didn't want to leave either of them out in the barn.:D
