I need help from somebody with an FFL to check the NCIS database for a serial number. See I'm thinking of trading a shotgun for this revolver my friend has but I want to make sure it's not stolen. He bought it from somebody else he doesn't know well, It's in perfect condition and I have the serial number only thing is I don't want to call the sheriff's office and ask them incase it was hot I don't want my friend to get in trouble. ::whew:: that was a mouthful. If any of you guys would be kind enough to check the database for me, send me and e-mail and I'll send you the serial number and model # ...I just don't want accidentally buy a stolen gun you know, but I don't want my friend to get in trouble if somethings wrong... shouldn't there be a stolen gun database so we could all check to make sure our transactions are clean?? well I would really really apreciate it :) Thanks guys. My email is [email protected]

God Bless :)

Glad you asked...

I was wondering if this is possible too...

I have passed up several deals that the price seemed decent, you know fair, but not to good to be true because I just did not know the history of the firearm...

knowledge is power

I wouldn't want to buy/trade a firearm just to find out it's hot and then it's confinscated or worse. :scrutiny:

AFAIK, NICS has nothing to do with serial numbers. They don't ask for a serial when you call in a check, so I doubt they have any kind of records. I believe the only route for checking something like this is through a police department or other LE agency.

really?? but the gunshop said they could check because they have FFLs but I didn't want them to check incase my friends gun was hot, they said it was they're policy to tell the sheriff..... what do you think the odds are that it's hot anyway?? it's in good condition and has a serial number intact

LE agency has to do a traceback to BATFE who will then want to know the details. Not something a FFL can do for you and your local LE agency will probably decline as well.

Unless you have to register the gun in your area (in which case the seller should have a registration available) you should be fine.

Write a bill of sale, have it signed, and keep the copy. That way if anything does come up, you are covered.
Getting it notarized is even better.

As a gun shop I have no idea if any of the guns that I have bought, sold, or transferred was hot. I have a paper chain as far as who I received the gun from and who walked out the door with it.

cool, I think I'll trade then, I never plan on selling it anyway b/c I shot it and really liked it. thanks everybody, especially hotpig. It's a Dan Wesson model 15 and I'm trading him my mossberg 500 (cause I'm going to be buying a 590 soon) you guys think it's a good deal?? money wise?

oh hotpig, as a gunshop owner how often do you get LE coming to you asking about a purchase or sale, trying to follow a stolen or crime used gun?? is it rare? I want that revolver but either way I hope it's clean and no I don't have to register in my state.

During the four years I worked for an FFL, I can only recall one instance of us getting a visit from the BATFE. In that case, we had a guy who got delayed, the three business days went by, we transferred him the gun, and then NICS called back and denied him. So the BATFE folks got his info from us and went and, um, repossessed the gun.

Granted, the fact that this was with a big chain that sold no handguns at all and mostly "sporting" long guns may have contributed to the lack of inquiries.

He bought it from somebody else he doesn't know well

Does he have reason to believe this guy he bought it from may have stolen it? If that's the case I wouldn't have bought the gun from him in the first place. Otherwise, people buy guns all the time from people they hardly know, happens everyday here on THR or places like gunbroker. I would just write and sign a bill of sale and not worry about it.

I didn't buy it yet, I was going to trade for it so there was going to be no bill of sell. I think the only reason I was paranoid is because my friend deals with some real characters sometimes.
