I love doing restoration work. Or refinishing work, in this case. I'm "sporterizing" an old Mauser, and this is the first time I've tried the steaming method instead of boiling. I found out about it here:

The guy has a pretty obnoxious use of non-High Road vocabulary, I wouldn't show this guy to my grandmother, so consider yourself warned.

C&Rsenal has become one of my favorite shows on youtube. I love to watch/listen to them as I butcher (I mean sporterize) this old gun. But I've got a problem! I can't get the steaming method to work like I want it to! Here is a site detailing it. I'm not using his formula for the rusting process, but that shouldn't matter. I'm using Laurel Barrel Brown and Degreaser, because I haven't run out yet! After that, I'll probably switch to this guy and support his work. Anyway... I'm getting runs/spots in my finish! I've read the page on "Rust Bluing Woes" and his solution was that my pipe wasn't hot enough yet. But, I have been following his directions to a "T". You should see a picture or two attached of my problem. It is turning blue/black, but leaving streaks and spots. This is the magazine floorplate, and it is tough to get a good image of it. You think I would try a whole gun without doing a small part first?

I really, REALLY want this steaming method to work, but I'm about ready to give up and go back to boiling (because I KNOW I can do it right that way).

For those of you who have experience (or don't, but have a guess)... ideas? Suggestions? Solutions? What am I missing?

Okay... forget it. My issues with spotting/streaking were due to my not perfect application of the acid (which I should have known better anyway). The steaming works, and it makes the bluing process even easier, if you can imagine that! However... I will probably do small parts by boiling at least the last pass, because the steaming didn't get into all the holes in my trigger guard, and there was some rust left in there. Small meaning trigger guard/magazine/baseplate etc. I'm going to use a torch for the screws and really small parts.

Before anyone hates on me... I purchased this as as already sporterized.
