A friend of mine confessed to me yesterday that he was arrested at the age of 13 for climbing in an open window at his school to "liberate" a bike for the weekend (happened nearly 40 years ago). It's a long story, and I don't want to go into the details here, but the bottom line, is that his parents did not hire a lawyer and threw him on the mercy of the court. He was convicted of a felony and received probation. He is (or was ) planning on filing for a CC permit, but is worried that this will come up and bite him in the rear. Does anyone know if a 40 year old juvenile conviction will show up on the background check ...or be cause for denial?

Gracias Jim....I'll check them out. I'm trying to get him to consult an attorney, and to deal with it head-on...but with all the other stipulations surrounding Ohio CC, he's losing interest in it totally....and that's a shame IMHO.

He might very well be able to ask that the record be expunged. As always, though, he needs to consult an attorney... anything else might land him in a great deal of trouble.

Wondering.....

....if he has ever purchased a firearm? If the NICS check came up OK, it would appear to not be on the record. Beware, IANAL.

Good luck.

He's bought several guns through dealers and has passed the background checks. But, I think you have to sign a waiver giving the Sherriff access to juvenile records, mental health records, etc. when you apply for the Ohio CC license. I'm applying for mine this Friday, so I'll find out then. That's what has him spooked. You know what they say about letting sleeping dogs...

I think he should go for it...

... I happen to know a person in the same age group that had similar issues. No problems with OH CCW.
Good luck.
