Just curious....what is the difference between these 9mm & 9 x 18. I saw the 2 different cartridges at ammoman.com while researching how expensive a Hi-Point carbine would be for plinking. Also which cartridge would be for the Hi-Point carbine...Thanks Tim

9x18 is for the Makarov pistol. 9x19 is 9mm. Luger or Parabellum, the Western standard round - when someone says "9mm.", they're usually referring to this round. To add to the confusion, there's also 9x17 (known as 9mm. Short, 9mm. Kurz, or .380 ACP), .38 Super (which is a longer 9mm. cartridge), 9x21, 9x23, 9mm. Largo, and so on... :D

The Hi-Point carbine uses 9mm. Luger, or 9x19.

What Preacherman wrote.........the hi-point carbine is a good buy for the money and also cheap to shoot.........you can buy ammo in 500 or 1000 round package deals and have plenty of plinking ammo.............

Preacherman was right on the money. However, here's a visual comparison of the 9x17, 9x18 and 9x19.

Hope this helps some.

Right to left: 9x17, 9x18, 9x19, .40 S&W and .45acp

Thanks for the clarification. I guess being confused about this round is understandable.

Good luck on your Hi-Point purchase. I just picked up a used one for $100.00 and just took it out for its first extended range session. It's the one with the chrome shroud....dubbed as the Han Solo model by THR's own RiffRaff

It was shooting just a bit to the right and a tad low.....but I put around 70 rounds through a hole the size of a coffee cup. Everyone kept looking to see what we were shooting.

The Hipoint shoots the 9mm parabellum round. Also known as:

9mm Luger (after the designer)
9mm Nato
"The 9mm"
9X19mm (The diameter and length of the entire shell)
9mm Auto

And a few others.

TimH....

We were shooting at 75 feet..maximum distance at our local indoor range. When I "auditioned" the gun at the outdoor range we were shooting off sand bags at 50 yards and I put 9 bullets through a hole smaller than a quarter....and I'm only an OK shot.

This little gun has quickly become my favorite.....cheap, cheap to shoot, accurate, reliable. I can't understand why everyone doesn't have one...except that the low price may put people off as to thinking it's not a well made firearm.

If I wear this one out...I'll just buy another:D

I shot someone else's Hi Point at 150 yards and actually hit a pie plate 9 out of 12 shots or struck so close we saw dirt hit the target from a low strike. It would have hit a silhouette. Considering we were shooting prone and not trying hard, this is pretty good for a $100 9mm carbine!
