I need advise on which 9mm pistol to buy.

I am choosing betwwen a FN-Browning 9mm Hi-Power Made in Belgium and a Glock 19 Made in Austria.

Both have 15-round magazines because Mecgar 15 round mags are available for the Hi-Power.

Which would you suggest I buy and why?

Thanks

High Power

For me, this is why I don't prefer Glocks

Does not fit my hand well....Ergonomics.

Chamber support is lacking....seen some case blowouts on this forum where similar rounds functioned fine in other pistols.

Don't like the trigger. I only consider handguns for potential carry purposes, would not feel safe with a Glock trigger. Feel the same about Springfield XD models for same reason. Don't like that "style" of trigger.

I have to admit, I have never shot a Glock, but when shopping and actually handling the firearms, it just did not "feel" right for me. Feel is important, very important. If you feel comfortable with it, go with your gut, it's rarely dumber than your intellect, it's just kind of odd that way when you cloud things up with thinking against your natural tendency to "feel." Can't explain why, but it just is.

Hope this helps,

the trigger on the glock is about the same as any other; keep your finger off unless you are ready to shoot. I have carried several different glocks in the last 12 years. Never has one accidentally shot me during carry. I agree about the feel of the weapon, and the way one shoots it. If you can find a range that rents the g19, rent it and shoot it for awhile. I love mine, but I usually end up carrying my 342ti S&W. But I can shoot the heck out of that glock. I love the 15 round mag. I have a few of those and a 31 rounder with the 2 round extension. Great backup mag in case the war pops off.

Concur with medic doc on choice and advice.

Another reason to pick the glock is the variety and availability of "plug and play" parts to customize.

But.....feel is a big part also, so go with what you are comfortable with, and then shoot it to proficiency.

The Hi-Power is a classic for a reason. Get one, you won't be disappointed..............

I have both. The Hi Power is beautiful. It has history and a soul. But if I was going to carry one day in and out it would be the Glock. Ugly souless and utterly reliable. I dont carry either because my carry is a Glock 23.

Don't know what you're using it for specifically, kind of two different guns to be comparing, real different. However, I could never recommend a Glock over the ageless, timeless and historic Hi-Power. Hi-Powers and 9mm's were made for each other!

I own the Glock 19, 23, and BHP in 40. It's going to boil down to which feels and shoots best and the purpose of use. For me, both feel comfortable in the hand. In bowling pin shoots or plate shoots, I have better times and accuracy with the BHP. The sights for me are better on the BHP, so that's my preference for shooting competitions. For carry I prefer the Glocks, not as many edges poking into those love handles, but either will work. You could do what I did and end up buying both down the road.

Six of one, half dozen of the other. Neither is my cup of tea. I think I might go for a Hi Power, though, just because it's a Browning. It would appeal to my traditional side, and I've never owned one. One of these days, I'm going to treat myself to one just because. They are fairly affordable, which is amazing considering the price most of the decent 1911s that actually work out of the box.

Quite a factual statement, actually.

Glock for carry, Hi-Power for the the joy it brings when shooting and the beauty of the design. That is not to say that a Glock is more reliable, or that the Hi-Power can't be carried, though.

Glock = plastic digital watch
Hi-Power = Rolex:D

Wow - talk about to completely different guns! I have both and about the only thing they have in common is they are both 9mm Semi-autos! ;)

Seriously I like both for what they are and both have been 100% reliable (well I did have some problems with the HP after installing a shock buffer. Pulled it back out and it's been fine ever since). Both are great guns so it really just boils down to what you like, what you are use to shooting and what you plan to do with it? If your an old-school, 1911, all steel gun kind of guy, the HP is for you. If you don't mind polymer and are looking for a hard core reliable work horse, you might want to give the Glock a try.

For carry, it's kind of a toss up. Again, it just depends on what you prefer? Cock and Lock or DOA type action? Fat and light (Glock) or skinny and heavy (HP)?

You really want to try both guns, side by side if possible. Trust me, they are so different that you will likely make your decision within 5 minutes of holding them both.

For me, the G19 is my working gun. The HP is my range queen.

I don't own a glock yet, but I do own 3 Hi Powers, and carry one of them.

Really, they're pretty different. The biggest difference for me -- and the one that makes a BHP more of a "serious" pistol for me -- is the grip angle. You really need to hold both of them, preferably side by side. That should tell you almost instantly which one is for you.

The subject of chamber support was brought up -- but I have NEVER heard of any problems with 9mm Glocks. I don't think this is an issue.

Do you like having a hammer? A thumb safety? Do you like to be able to change the grip of the pistol to suit you? Do you like a skinny gun, even though it's a little heavier? Then you might be more suited to the Hi Power.

Would you rather not have a hammer? Would you rather not be bothered by a thumb safety? Is the factory grip of the Glock suitable to you? Do you like a lighter gun, even though it's a little thicker and blockier? Then you might be more suited to the Glock.

Reliability of both guns is incredible. Durability for either gun will likely not be an issue. Both are military pistols and can handle hard use.

I don't agree that the FN has to be a range queen. I use mine just like I use any other pistol, and I trust it completely. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, but not all of the HP's beautiful qualities lie on the outside.

Most of the responses to these threads are 95% opinion. The cold, hard fact of it is this: Only you can decide which one is best for you. Handle them both. :)

I have both and like each of them, probably for different reasosn and different purposes. The Browning is a more stylish and historic handgun but the Glock is the one I would pick for daily use/concealed carry. I would advise you to try both of them (if you haven't already) and see if one fits you better than the other.

If you end up with both, then all the better.

I'm guessing that was in response to what I wrote? If so, just to be clear, I wrote "The HP is MY range queen" meaning that is the way I use it. I was not trying to imply that is all they are good for. I seriously considered using my HP for CCW\HD but decided I would prefer to stick with a DAO type action. If I was more willing to change to a single action (cocked and locked) type of carry, I would have no issue using my HP for that purpose.

I love Hi Powers. I have two of them. However, if I could only have one gun for both the range and carry and had to choose between the two, I'd take the Glock 19. Light weight for carrying all day, 20 ounces compared to 34 ounces for the HP, and durable enough to shoot at the range.

I don't have a Glock 19. I carry various different 1911s. But that's just because I have the means to do so at this time. If economics forced me to sell everything down to one gun, I'd probably sell all the 1911s, and HPs and buy one Glock 19.

Hmm, hi power is sexy, accurate, and it's got a manual safety. however it can't take a light, can't have much acsessories, and it's only got 13 rounds to play with.

Where as the Glock 19's, have a 15 round standard mag but the gun itself is smaller then the hi power, it's plastic so it's just drop dead ugly, but because of that you wont have heart attack should you drop it, scratch it, ect ect. It can take tac lights, lasers, and if you want you can use the 17 round mags and 33 round mags that go to the standard sized glocks for the 19. that gives you like 33 rounds to mess with at the range:D hmm if i was you i would get a Glock 19. Oh wait i did have one at one time, but i sold it so i could help pay for my Colt Government, but i have no regrets.:neener:

However i am thinking about getting a Glock 17 soon for range play because it's just so fun to pop off 33 rounds in fast succession :D

Nope, not in response to you... however, I did borrow your term (range queen) because it so perfectly fit what I was trying to describe. :) I'm just saying that, although I can certainly understand having "babies" :D , that the HP and the Glock can both hang right in there in the reliability dept.

Nobody can knock you for prefering a different flavor of trigger action, either. That's why all ice cream isn't vanilla. ;)

Wes :)

I carried the HP for a lot of years; starting in the mid-70s and continuing until the early/mid 90s. IMO it's one of the best fighting 9mms out there and you can do FAR FAR worse.

Unfortunately, you've decided to compare it to the G19; which, I think, is perhaps the equal of the HP and possibly the best fighting 9mm on the planet. I switched to the G19 for daily carry about 10-12 years ago. It's lighter, carries more ammunition and can use G17 mags, which I do.

Lately, however, I've taken to carrying the G19 bas a backup to a Beretta 92 on the hip. I reconsidered the HP for that role but the Beretta fits my hand better (I have large hands) as perfect as the HP is for many. After many years of trying, I've mastered the Beretta's DA/SA trigger pull. And, the Beretta swallows everything I put in it.

If you ask me to decide which is the best 9mm between the BHP, G19 and B92...I don't know that I could. Each has it's particular advantages.

YMMV
