Hello out there!

I was wondering what .22lr's besides the Ruger 10/22 have good choices for high-capacity magazines and also a reputation for accuracy.

Not really looking for tube-fed, would rather be able to reliably feed lots of ammo in one set-up. I have a 10/22 but have been disappointed with its 'accuracy,' it simply does not shoot in the same place each time.

I know Remington makes a .22 with a factory high-cap magazine but have not heard anything about its reliability or accuracy. Am I better off just finding a more accurate barrel for the 10/22 or finding a new rig altogether? Thanks for y'all's input!

I have a Marlin Model 70HC which came with a 25 round magazine. It is pretty accurate, but I think you might have a hard time finding one of them now, I don't think they have made them in a while.

My feeling is the 10/22 is the best candidate for a hi-cap magazine out there.

It's wide magazine well makes a double-stack mag possible.

No hi-cap single-stack will work as well because of the extreme curve necessary to make up for the rims stacking on top of each other.

As for poor accuracy?

Are you sure it's the gun?
Mine will put them all in the same ragged hole at 50 yards with a 3-9 scope on it.

Then on the otherhand, excellent accuracy and blasting hi-cap mags down range don't usually co-exist all that well.

Not having trouble with the mags really, which is surprising.

I do know how to shoot, and with sandbags and a scope at 50yds a rifle that doesn't shoot the way rc's supposedly does is not an accurate firearm. I was reminded of a comment made here about the 10/22 I'd read before: 'it shoots patters, not groups.' Exactly my experience thus far. Maybe rc got a good one, maybe I got a poor example, but I have certainly read about all the modifications folks make to 10/22's to make them accurate, I don't want a rifle that isn't reliably accurate out of the box.

Any recommendations on double-stack mags for 10/22's?

Any recommendations for reasonably priced barrels for 10/22's?

Barrrels... Green Mountain.

I think you have one of the best for larger capacity 22 rifles. GSG-5 and the new one by Colt (when it is available) would be additional options.

Buy a box of every brand of ammo you can find and test them.

Mine "patterns" with some brands and shoots others very well.

To be honest the Ruger 10/22 is the ONLY reliable and durable .22 rifle that I've manged to find. I hope I'm shown to be wrong.

-stay away from any double stacked .22 mags since the rim of the cartridge seems to cause malfuntions in most but not all guns. Mine were Ram Line and they were terrible.

-I would suggest just getting a 10/22 and swapping out the stock and anything else you don't care for.

-my 10/22 factory barrel shot well at 25 yards but I don't know if you consider this enough distance.

Any reviews of the Remington 597?

I got one from walmart a few years ago. I had constant jams of every type with all kinds of ammunition, and across 6 Remington factory mags. I sold it for the scrap metal that it was. For what its worth, it was very accurate.

If accuracy is high on your list of requirements, then a bolt action is the only way to go. I know you said to didn't want a tube fed, but the Marlin 981T is an excellent bolt gun. 17 rounds of .22LR.

You can spend a fortune on 10/22s and they still might not shoot like a good bolt gun. They are fun though.

10/22 with a green mountain barrel with a worked over trigger group - and a tactical innovonations aluminum mag.. Can't beat that at all.

+1 for fun, but I don't think accuracy would be all that great. Anyone with more experience with one, I have only played with one once (with irons only). They are a blast, and have 22 round mags. :)

so... you are aware that you can modify your 10/22 pretty easily and much cheaper than buying a new gun and hoping it works (fingers crossed)

Probably the most consistantly accurate semi-22 rifle is the TC R-55. However, the largest magazine that is available is 10-round.

When I first starting plinking with a 10-22, I thought the 25 and 30-round magazines pretty cool. Got that out of my system and I'm quite comfortable with the standard Ruger mag. I do have the higher capacity mags just in case I have the urge.

The current Remington 597's are generally good rifles. There are higher capacity magzines available. They will be typically much more accurate than you typical Ruger 10-22. Most Remington products are pretty good. The 504 and Model Five were a somewhat duds, but some really like them.

TC R-55.
Rem 597 with latest gen mags.
Marlin Model 60. The real kind with the 22" barrel and 17 round tube. Spooky accurate.
