High Standard 1911

I'm fairly new to guns, so my knowledge of older gun manufacturers is a little limited. I was in the local gun shop earlier today and they had a very reasonably priced mil-spec(ish?) 1911 made by High Standard. Having never heard of the company, I questioned the shop's owner. He said that High Standard made some great guns in the past but until recently had faded into the back ground.

I was very impressed with the pistol, for the price, and it seemed like a very solid starting 1911. Anyone have any experience with these firearms?
 
I had opportunity to fire a few hundred rounds with a HS recently. I found it to be on-par with any of the better mil-spec 1911's. I experienced one stovepipe in about 400 rounds.

I have since learned that the HS GI model is made by the RIA folks. Next time I'm at the shop I'll have to compare them side by side, as I am unsure as to whether they are the same pistol with a different brand name, or they are made to different specs.
 
High Standard vs. Springfield Mil Spec

There is a good article comparing the High Standard and the SA in the Nov-Dec issue of American Handgunner. Also some threads on

The High Standards are running about $450 in my area. I understand they are available from only one distributor. AH liked the High Standard. Has a bevel mag well, lower ejection port, and shot slightly tighter groups than the SA. It's a nice looking pistol, judging by the AH pics.
