My only backpack is an UnderArmour backpack left from one of my boys school days. It is black and reminds me of the antifa crowd. I cannot abide. It's going in the hopper.
I need a new small to medium daypack for the usual: binos, thermos, sammich, ammo, headlamp, phone, etc.a coat could either be strapped to the outside or fit inside. Some outside pockets. Some attachment loops....any suggestions.?
I'm not looking to spend too much, less than $100?
Camo or tan.
Considering a single shoulder strap model since I have a bum shoulder and spin in a circle trying to get out of a tshirt .
Somebody point me in the right direction.

Don't know if I can help, but I've used a cheap field and steam pack from dicks maybe for 10 years. I still have it but the bottom has worn out I tried fixing it but don't know if it will hold. It's just big enough for all my stuff and even a wool blanket on cold days.

I was given a Alice pack I'm going to use this year, maybe to big and heavy but I'll give it a try. Wish here in N.Y. We could camp out and hunt it would be nice for a overnight camping trip.

Look on LAPG.com. I have something that looks like a giant fanny pack with backpack straps and waist padding and straps. Basspro and cabelas make them. I love mine.

I'll second looking at LAPG, great company:

One of their "Bailout bags" might fit the ticket for a shoulder carry bag and they also have a bunch of single strap "sling" bags that won't break the bank. I'd also look hard at a "buttpack" if you've got back issues.

I've got an older Maxpedition "Sabercat" versipack (Buttpack) that I rigged up with suspenders that's carries quite a bit and is comfortable. It stays in my truck as a "bailout bag".

The color options aren't quite what they used to be, but Mountain Smith are pretty decent. This one is that largest "lumbar" pack they have. There is a single shoulder strap, which can be used in conjunction with the waist belt, or separately. A two shoulder harness can be installed, though you said you didn't want that.

I have the next size down, and it's really not big enough for my liking (unless I'm only going out for a few hours). This one might do it for me though. They're comfortable, and carry stuff.

Look at Goodwill and consignment shops, I was given a first responders backpack to carry out some things at an estate auction that works great for me. I keep one small fanny pack for first aid with everything in vac sealed bags.

I find most of the inexpensive ones from Walmart etc. have shoulder straps too short for an adult wearing heavier clothing. They are really designed more for teenagers to carry stuff to school. The ones designed for real hiking/backpacking are much better quality, but most aren't cheap. The actual weight of the pack matters too. Some of the ones with military or tactical designs with all of the webbing and multiple pockets get heavy real quick even before adding anything. The fabric used on the tactical ones is tougher, heavier, and noisy. Not needed for hunting.

I have several packs, but I use them for a lot of different things. I like simple designs with only 2-3 compartments to keep weight down and keeping them less complex. Size depends. In colder weather I need room for more gear, and possibly to pack out meat. It is easy to get too big of a pack and if it is big I tend to over pack. I also prefer one that is tall and narrow to carry a rifle over my shoulder. Some are wide and interfere with a slung rifle.

I'd be looking at quality gear from some place like REI. If you're patient you can find discontinued items at reduced prices not much more than you'd pay at Walmart. Manufactures make minor tweaks to this years models and stores like REI heavily discount the old version. It doesn't have to be camo. Black, green or other muted colors work well too.

Some examples on REI's discount pages.

This has potential

We toured some Florida intercoastal waterways with Mrs farmer's cousins. They had an interesting bag slung over the seat of the boat. I inquired about it. They couldn't recall the brand, but remembered that it was from Amazon.
I am 99% certain that this is the same bag.
They are members of Freedom Boat Club. (Both are ex-coast gaurd) and they keep their boating essentials in the bag.
I recognized it on Amazon.

I thought I would post a follow up after I received my new pack.:
It arrived just in time for my all day advanced combat pistol class. All of my essential gear fit easily inside.
I am thrilled with it, even though it is from China. It is just big enough to fit around me, and may be small when I get a hunting coat and bibs on.
Otherwise, the quality looks really good. It has the right amount of usable pockets and straps.
The main compartment is large enough for my ballistic pistol case and my earphones. The secondary compartment holds my 250plus rds of 9mm. Another pocket holds my prescription shooting glasses. I even strapped spare t-shirt to the outside in case I want a dry shirt at some point. I probably could have stuffed it inside.
I am very happy with my purchase, especially when it was less than $30. It is a single strap. The brand is Gewara from Amazon.

ETA: I discovered the shoulder straps have plenty of adjustment. I hadn't noticed that until now. It will be plenty big enough to fit over bulky clothes.

I know its been a month since the OP made his choice, but id like to add a few brands ive had good luck with.

MidwayUSA's house brand is constructed well. I have a medium sized pack of theirs, as well as a double rifle case. Quality zippers and cordura material.

5.11 has a bit better and smoother construction, but is twice or more the price. I have their Rush72 backpack and really like it. Their pouch and pocket designs are a bit more ergonomical than the cheaper bags. And the waist belt and straps have great padding.

I had a Camelback brand pack i scored for 70 bucks at the local surplus store. It was 5.11 quality.

Most milsurp stuff ive bought from midway and the local place have been great.
