My name is Lisa Thomas. I am an executive recruiter. I work in the gun and sport industry. I have been hired by a client in Iowa. They are aggressively looking to hire a Firearms Technical Copy Writer.

To be considered for this diverse opportunity you must have a strong background in firearms and ammunition. You must be able to produce award quality product features, research and review new products, write utilizing many media forms such as print, catalog, e-commerce just to name a few.

You must have a Bachelor's degree in a related field such as: communication. journalism, advertising, public relations or marketing, plus at least two years experience as a professional writer. The position is located in Iowa.

The company is offering relocation assistance if necessary. If you fit the skills to hire my client would like to interview you immediately.

Just out of wildest curiosity, would the position of technical copy writer not be perfectly tele-commutable? Why does the position require reloacting to Iowa?

It would seem that a lot of product could be shipped back and forth for review, and email, net-meeting software, and the like could make delivery of copy just about as instantaneous as a walk down the hall -- all for far less than the cost to relocate someone.

That opens the door to far more qualified applicants country-wide who may jump at the opportunity, but not at the requirement to move.

Too bad my BA is in education and I don't have two years' professional writing experience (unless blogger and bedtime stories count) because I'd be genuinely interested in working for Brownells and writing for a living, even if I had to go to Iowa to do it.
Actually . . . I may make a call anyway. Can't hurt to call, right?

We do have good hunting here depending on what you like. Lots of big deer, including big does if you just want meat.

Les Baer is here also, as is Volquartsen, but I would go with Brownells.

I've seen the barn roofs totally intact laying in fields.

Well, my Batchelor's Degree is in History, and my Master's and Specialist's are in Education. I was with several organizations in the Army that produced training and training-related documents and products, including firearms-related material. After retiring, I worked in the commercial training and training related field, and developed a lot of products -- including the Collective Training Program for the experimental Motorized Infantry Brigade at Fort Lewis, WA. I developed computer-based training for the Army of Singapore -- running actual exercises, videotaping the exercises and alternate courses of actions and outcomes to produce interactive training products.

But I live on my farm in Arkansas -- and I'm not leaving. I might be interested if this was a tele-communting job.

I believe they can provide you with some good leads, I suspect that your client is a member of the foundation.
 
The relocation requirment is absolute; it's also not the only factor that makes this position tough to fill.

A great opportunity for a 24 year old copywrighter who wants to move out of mom and dad's basement. :)

As someone who has hired telecommuters and been one myself (software industry), I can definitively say that telecommuting is a horrible thing to manage. Productivity falls off really fast if you can't get your "team" in the same room (literally, not via WebEx, PC Anywhere, etc.). Even if you have the most dedicated folks with great work ethic, you lose an awful lot of creativity and brainstorming power when working across the 'net.

I've found just the opposite. I've worked with teams where the members were located on different continents, and the cost of face-to-face meetings was impossible. Despite that, we produced quality products on a tight schedule.

Well, I've got a Masters in Communication and wrote some articles for Jerry Rakusan back when he was editing Guns and American Handgunner, mostly product review and how-to stuff. Since then, I've written a bunch of reports and articles for various USAF and Army magazines (Hint for you young military guys: Never let your ops officer know you can write a simple declaritive sentence!) and dozens of manufacturing procedures for a major medical equipment company.

But I'm NOT moving to Iowa!!
 
My background and education would make this a perfect job for me, but I'm also not willing to relocate for this kind of work.
 
I would be interested to know what the salary range was. This sounds like more of a starter position. I agree they would probably get much more qualified people if they were willing to do it as tele commute work. From the job description, does not sound like the person needs to move there. I do writing/consulting work for companies all over the globe writing, testing, etc. and never have any issues with it.
