I saw an advertisement which had a hog call on sale for less than ten bucks.
I haven't heard anyone talk about calling hogs and I'm new to this game so what I'm asking is...

Is it legal in Texas? Does it work?

Thing looked like a mutant bendy straw in realtree.

They actually work pretty good. For calling sows. One a rare occasion you can call in a boar but it is pretty rare. They make a piglet in distress call which will not only attract sows but also coyotes! Most of the calls make juvenile to young sow in distress or mate sounds. All in how you blow pretty much. The grunters are good to use if you have a pack close and holding up or veering off out of your shot lanes for archery. If there are boars in the pack they will almost always come to a grunt if close by. Don't grunt like you would a deer grunt. Use varied short, fast, repititious grunts followed by a long squeal on the squealer if they are around 100 to 200 yards out and you will get some attention.

I am not a big fan of Primos calls. They tend to be a little too "toney" and high pitched for me. The Haydel's - Boss Hawg call is a pretty good one. It's more along the lines of a boar call. Has good deep grunts and can imitate a higher pitched squeal from a fight. A good distress call that will bring in the pissed off sows is the Woods Wise- Screamin Hog. That bugger has brought in a few sows ready to fight for me in the past. Be warned though, when using a distress call, the pigs are coming in for a fight and will charge you if they see you. People underestimate pigs quite frequently as well as quite foolishly. A pissed off boar or even a sow protecting young is a VERY dangerous animal and one not to be taken lightly. You may look those calls up if you so choose to. My "Google Fu" is tired today.
