Hollowpoint 45/70 molds?

After having hunted with the 45-70 for over 10 years, I don't know why I would want a hollow point. It makes a big enough hole all by itself. Deer and buffalo respond just as advertised by history. I have generally used 400 grain and up, and generally in the 1800 fps range.

Normally, I would agree with you. But, I'm going 1060 fps (subsonic) and suppressed for whitetails. A hollowpoint that would give some fast expansion on impact would help a lot. Would be poured from pure lead.

Lee used to catalog a 400gr HP. I have one, and have killed deer with it. Can't say it expands cast of w/w metal. Never recovered one. Berm recoveries show some "riveting" but not enough to be worth the slow single cavity mold vs the newer 2-cavity molds.
IMO no need for HP, even at subsonic speeds.
Lyman also makes a 330gr HP.

Lyman #457122 troops bullets right around 330gr depending upon the alloy used. It might be what you're looking for. With soft lead and lube it will probably be near 350gr.

At 1060 fps, the 350 grain bullet still has nearly 900 foot pounds of energy. If you are looking to insure penetration, perhaps the heavier bullet, 400 or more grains will get the job done. I have also used 420 to 440 grain cast bullets with black or substitutes at 1200 1400 fps that passed all the way buffalo, and were not recovered. I'm accustomed to a pretty rainbow shaped trajectory and the challenges it provides. At under 1100 fps, range estimation strikes me as a daunting task in the field. A heavier bullet would also help the bullet keep what velocity it has over a longer range.
