I acquired an AR-10A4 flat-top carbine today and am interested in adding a holographic sight of some sort to it. The previous owner was kind enough to equip the rifle with Wilson Combat flip-up front and rear sights, and I'd like to preserve their function as well.

Usage/Requirements:
- Not looking to break the bank, under $500 if possible
- I usually shoot out to 100 yards tops
- Rifle isn't expected to see much abuse
- Unit needs to be able to handle .308 recoil

I've seen the Eotech and Aimpoint units and like that form factor. The ACOG units exceed my needs and price range frankly. I get the impression the Bushnell units would probably meet my needs. I'm not a total AR noob, I have a Colt HBAR with both standard and flat-top uppers. I'm using a Leupold VX-III LR scope on it though, so I'm not terribly familiar with the holographic sights.

Thoughts or advice?

eotech 552 with 308 reticle and add a 4x magnifier if you can afford it

I've got Eotech 512 and Aimpoint ML2 mounted on 2 different .308 AR-style rifles. Both are great for snap shooting within 100 yds, just put the dot on target and pull the trigger. The dots are kind of big for use at greater ranges. When shooting at distance, I swap the dots out for a Leupold 5.5x20 in a quick detach mount.

I have used my EOTech with my AR15 at 300 yard targets and it works just fine. The center dot makes it easy to line up on small targets.

I would also suggest a magnifier if you can since .308 is capable of greater distances and a little magnification is a great help for targeting.

Thanks for the advice so far folks. I've looked at the Eotech site, and familiarized myself with the models. Thanks for pointing out the .308 specific models. Where do I find a magnifier? Is this a product option or upgrade? Or are you referring to a totally different sight, like an ACOG?

Thanks!

The magnifier with either an Aimpoint or EOTech will put you over $500.

If you want just a 1x red dot sight, the two best contenders are the EOTech 55x and the Aimpoint M2, M3, or M4. Of those two, the Aimpoint has far superior battery life and a better user interface (power, brightness).

For plinking at small and/or further objects, some magnification is nice. A Leupold 1.5-5x or 2-8x VXIII would be a good choice in your price range. You'll need to use a LaRue SPR or EER mount (or another substantially similar) to get the right eye relief.
