I carry an XD-40 with a IWB don humes holster. After reading a piece on this site reffering to the "Vasectomy Carry" I have been unable to put my pistol pointing at my johnson anymore. Am I the idiot that can't think of any other way to put the holster in my waist besides in front? I tried the side, but that was uncomftorable. I read wehre a guy said he wears his at 4 oclock. Is that on the right side just behind the hip? If so isnt the clip facing the wrong way towear it in that position. I know this is scattered, but what I am asking is how can I wear my pistol inside my waist without it pointing at my favorite body parts?. Thanks for any feedback..

Assuming you are right handed and have a right-handed (not crossdraw) holster then yes, just behind the point of the hip bone (or the leg seam of your trousers) is the most common and probably fastest position. The butt of the weapon should tuck up in by your kidney.

You might check some of the holster websites, they'll usually have pictures to illustrate.

Or, this is the 3-4 o'clock position carry. 1st picture in the thread.

It depends on the holster. I carry right behind my right hip, usually in a milt sparks VM II, and it is quite comfortable (relatively speaking).

BTW, welcome, enjoy the stay, lots of great information here.

Sorry, I knew I left some stuff out. I am infact right handed, and do use a Inside waist holster. I am unsure if it is crossdraw or not. I believe it is not. If I keep the holster on the weapon and hold it in my right hand the clip is on the right side of the holster. That means that if I put the holster at 4oclock right behind the hip, the handle is pointing to my left side. I think I watched too much TV before getting my CCW, cuz I would have never thought to put it there and it be comftorable.

I carry closer to 3-3:30 than 4. You should probably play with the position a bit. Practice bending, sitting, walking, driving etc til you figure out the most comfortable (probably a compromise) position.

I got my CHL about a month ago, and about that time my girlfriend caught me "posing" in the mirror with my gun. I was really just trying to get comfotorable with my holster, but she still makes fun of me for it :) I will try what you said, but this time behind a locked door! Thanks CB

When I carried a S&W Mod 15 in an ankle holster, I positioned it on the front of my leg pointing straight down at my foot. (This was because off to the side made me walk funny.) I would load the weapon, insert it into the holster, and strap the holster to the boot under my flight suit. One day some SP saw me strapping it on and commented that it wasn’t a good idea because if the gun went off it would blow my foot off. I reminded him that rounds do not spontaneously combust, and even if one did, there was still only a one in six chance it would be the round lined up with the barrel.

You should wear your holster where it’s most comfortable. If you don’t pull the trigger, the gun won’t go off.

i dont know if this is weird, but i wear my g26 and 1911 at about 5 oclock. does anyone else do this? i'm 5'11 and about 180 lbs. if i wear at 3-4 oclock.. then the handle will poke out from the shirt and will be noticable. but at 5, then its flush with my back, but a little bit more uncomfortable when sitting, but IMO its worth it for the concealibility.

i also wear an ankle strap for the g26, but i position it on the back of my leg. if it was on the side, itll stick out like a martha stewert ankle tracking device.. and sticks out on my pants. but being on the back (which really doesn't make it any harder to draw from an ankle holster as is) it's 100% concealable. again, does anyone else do this?

this is a good topic

I wasn't too worried about a round spontaneously combusting, and like you I holster my weapon before strapping in to my body. However, in the instance I may need to draw my loaded weapon from the holster to defend my life, I am affraid of the possibility of premature discharge due to a misgrip when drawing, and inturn turning my hardware into mush. I am sure that with the amount of combat training you have experienced in the Air Force this would not be as likely, but for me if the time came where I had to use my gun, there is no telling what the adrenaline would do to my common sense. Call me a paranoid rookie handler, but Im gonna try the 4 oclock method :)

I have a friend who carries a model 1911 in an inside the waist band holster at 6:00. It looks awfully uncomfortable to me, especially since he's not at all sway-backed, but it works for him.

UW, I need to put them at 5-6 too, if I don't the handle points out pretty badly.

I am 5'8" and about 190, some of it around the middle but not a lot. I still wear a 33 pant like I did 10 years ago.....

2 o'clock works for me too if I am not riding/driving, pointed at my leg and not my jewels.

I haven't found ANYTHING for IWB that is comfortable driving, 3 is best but it prints badly when out of the car. 6 is OK, but not all that comfortable for long periods.

The next choice beside location is cant angle.

A holster that tilts the gun forward 5-10-15 degrees, so it makes more or less a lower case "y" when seen from the side, will tuck the butt in tighter to the side and leave less of a "point" to protrude past your actual back line.

If you wear your pants at your waist and not on your hips the weapon will be forced to incline in toward you by the curve of your hip, also minimizing the butt protrusion.

The "bobtail" conversion Ed Brown (IIRC) came up with also minimizes the "point" of the 1911 to an amazing degree given the minimal amount of material actually removed.

Actually, you were doing exactly the right thing. Carrying any gun concealed calls for (requires) some experimentation as to sucessful, comfortable, and effective positioning. First, you do need to have a good gun belt which will provide stable support for your handgun/holster. That's an absolute must. There are a bunch of sites on the web that will show you what you need. IMHO a good place to start is to be found at Wilderness Belts http://thewilderness.com/catalog/default.php/cPath/3 which gives you an excellent start and a reasonable price.

Second, you DO need to move that holster on your body so that it will be easily accessible for the draw, will remain concealed, and, above all, stable on the belt. Just where that is will require you to so some experimentation. As to your girl I? I bet she gets a new piece of clothing, jewelry, hair do, etc. and poses before a mirror so that she gets maximum effect. Never seen a girl that did not do that. Okay for her and not for you? Baloney:cuss:

I fine that the two positions I favor are the so-called "appendix" position - about 2 to 2:30 and at 4:00. Depending which gun I am carrying these two positions work quite well - for me that is. For you? Well you need to just find that out for yourself. Good luck and have a fun time experimenting.;)
