Holster scratched finish on my S&W M&P 45 -- what to do???

Hi, I just bought a leather SImply Rugged holster for my S&W M&P 45 and it scratched the finish on the slide of my gun. I suppose the simply rugged holster was a bit too rugged for this gun. As much as I like the holster, I think it will have to be sold because the leather is too rough for the gun. I am real sad about this. Now, I am wondering what can I do to repair the scratch on my slide? The slide is blued and has real nice finish too it. I am shocked how easy the finish could scratch. I only put it in and out of the holster a few times. The scratch extends for about 2 inches from the front sight to the action of the slide. Is therea cheap way to restore the pretty blue texture to the gun or would it be expensive to have a gunsmith restore the finish and remove the scratch? When I say scratch, I mean the finish is scratched off, I don't think the aluminum or whatever material it is, itself is scratched.

Only the first scratch hurts. Any holster with enough time will wear the finish, it's just the life of a carry gun. If you want it to stay pretty forever then put it in a glass case and stick it on the mantel.

I like the High Noon Mr. Softy IWB holsters. They are soft and thin so they don't feel bulky and they are as easy on the finish as anything else out there.
 
Guns get scratched when they are used. Wear and tear is a normal part of things.

I would check the holster for anything embedded in the leader, it should not have scratched the gun that easily. And you can try to use some amumiblack on the scratch. But frankly I would not worry about it.
 
My carry gun has so many little scratches and little nicks. Even Tenifer will wear off after a long time.

It's not a big deal. If you really want the look of the gun to stay cherry, get an NP3 coating on your slide.
 
Check the holster for foreign material, it shouldn't be gouging the finish. But to be realistic, a carry pistol will get some scratches and wear, so why not use this pistol and holster for that purpose, seeing as you have deflowered the pistol already.

The SERPA holster I sometimes use has left two baldspots on my 1911.

I just touch up the spots every now and then and call it even.

I was in the consignment section of the gun store last Saturday and I saw a Glock 17 that had extreme holster wear. It only had about 35% of its Tenifer remaining. That Tenifer is about as tough as it gets and it still scratched down to the steal. I have to join in the chorus of advice that you have heard repeatedly on this thread. If you do not want it to wear, then don’t carry it. I just bought a Smith and Wesson 37-2 and it is so beautiful (and they don’t make them anymore) that I can’t bring myself to carry it. It's just a fact of life. Carry guns get scratched up; but it is honest wear.
 
Something else to keep in mind if you are ever involved in a SD shooting the police will impound your gun as evidence. If the stories I've read here are any indication it won't be in "nice" condition when you get it back.

If a little scratch on the slide has you upset that'll send you into orbit

Are you sure its a scratch?

If I rub my gold ring across the slide of my glock or kimber with black oxide finish it will leave a scratch, but closer examination will reveal its actually gold from the ring that has rubbed off on the slide not a scratch. You may want to try clean ing the scratch by rubbing it with a cloth and some solvent. Especially if the S&W has a Melonite finish (very hard finish to scratch), it may be that some of the holster, or a ring you are wearing has rubbed off on the gun.

But if its a carry gun its gonna get lots of scratches and wear, its not like its a blued pre 29 five screw we are talking about.
 
Natural part of ownership -- see what your gun looks like after several thousand rounds or a year of carry.
It hurts for a minute, make up a good story of how you got it & call it a day.
 
I just checked the M&P that is riding on my hip to verify... The slide is stainless steel, even scratched it shouldn't matter as far as corrosion resistance goes.
 
Throw it down your driveway so the other sides look evenly worn. Be proud of your wear and tear. Its a status symbol that says "Hey, I actually use my gun.":rolleyes:

Real guns have scratches.

The Glocks Tennifer coating is clear. The black oxide coating deos scratch off but not the tennifer. So its still good. You would have to gouge the steel to get through the tennifer. No harm in getting a gun refinished when the holster wear is extreme to the point of hilarity.

Melonite is nearly as good as tennifer. Only its black.
 
My STI Trojan is pristine. It's my bedside gun.

My Kimber Tactical Custom II looks like it's been thrown through a wood chipper. It's my carry gun.

If it makes you feel better, the M&P isn't known to be resistant to wear. My brother's started rusting almost immediately and he had to send it back to get rifinished.
 
If you wear your firearm every day, it will look like a DOG. So buy a dog to start with or get comfortable with fading beauty.
 
While I am certainly a fan of properly maintaining my guns, I used to be very particular about keeping them looking factory fresh. A few months of carry, and a few thousand rounds later, they have a different look. I like to think of it as well experienced. And I don't feel bad when I toss it into the center console of my truck either.
