Holster That Expose The Front Sight, Are Terrible....

I usually try to have the front sight covered when I build a holster because its hard to form a sight tunnel in the leather that will keep the front sight from catching on a draw if you twist the gun at all.

I don't go for closed bottom holsters though, I like for debris to be able to fall out. I train horses and do farm repairs/fabrication. Arena dust and hay chaff can get ANYWHERE. I carry a fixed blade knife in a leather sheath that is boned down tight enough the knife pops in place like its kydex and about once a week I have to clean a surprising amount of hay chaff out of the bottom of the sheath. My gun gets dusty and needs blown off/cleaned occasionally but nothing ever accumulates inside the holster.

I had a IWB holster that didn't fully cover the muzzle and front sight. Didn't think anything of it until I got a firearm with a slightly longer and threaded barrel. Didn't take long before I was wearing a hole just above my back pocket in jeans. My first inclination was to just deal with it and replace my jeans every few months. The option I went with was much better. I contacted the holster company and had them redesign the holster to add a protection around the threaded barrel so it wouldn't wear on my jeans. Outstanding customer service. But unfortunately the company recently went out of business.

I carry a 3" Rossi in a 2.75" galco holster above my right butt pocket. As that suggests, i get almost 1/4" of protrusion from the muzzle end. But it also rides high, and i found the only issue real quick. Getting to my wallet was a dangerous endeavor! However, its a stainless gun, so i just took a file and smoothed out the surprisingly sharp edges on the muzzle end of the gun. The muzzle is pretty well forced against my cheek, so its protected for normal carry duties.

For anything where ill surely be kneeling down in the woods or such, a closed end holster is worn.

I've made up several Yaqui Slide type rigs over the years,...and they worked out ok on our home range, but I never felt comfortable out and about on the farm with them...just couldn't get the fit tight enough to ensure retention through the varied chores encountered daily on a country place.

Too, I found that half a box of ammunition fired through one of my .45's or either of the Hi Powers left the forward slide area smoky which quickly found its way on my pants....not a big selling point with Mrs. Rodfac

Best regards, Rod
