Pardner pump Protector ...it's a clone of the 870 remington and can be purchased at Dicks and other large outlets for under $200. A very strong, reliable shotgun,18in cilinder bore barrel .Takes 2 3/4 or 3in shells.Slugs ,buckshot, birdshot, it handles them all without a hitch.

What he said. I sell a ton of these. I believe they will interchange with 870 parts. Sturdy, reliable and cheap.

I LOVE my Pardner Protector. Dick's had it marked for $219, but I showed them Academy's ad and got it for $189. Clone of an 870, very solid gun, and has a nice stock recoil pad - it's heavy, but because of that it soaks up the recoil - expecially combined with the excellent pad. I can certainly recommend it.

"It's one thing to have an OPINION about pistol grip shotguns and state it, as many here have done ad nausium, (including me) but to lie to further your cause is over the top.
There is no such ruling from the AFT or anyone else."

I did not give my opinion, I cut and paste a link about the ruling. I did not lie to further my cause or anyone else. So don't be flaming me guns and More......:fire:

All right, let's not get too heated over this. Someone out there is blowing his top a bit and stolivar just quoted him. Got to be careful with info available out there on the "errornet."

Let's all chill and, heck, (I know it sounds all corny and old-school) maybe even apologize and move along.

You may want to check out the used market for a police trade in. Several departments around the country traded their pump guns for semi-auto guns and the you can sometimes find great deals on the police trade ins. Many departments used the Remington 870 in several configurations. Also the Mossberg 500 series was very popular with departments that had to watch their budgets. If you choose a 12 gauge check out the reduced recoil loads. They carry the same number or pellets or one less than normal and don't beat you the way the full load would.

Here's my last and best advice for gramps.
Take him out and shoot some shotguns.
There's got to be (hopefully) an outdoor range that will accommodate shotguns, call around.
He may change his mind.

Try this site to find ranges.

There might be one nearby.

Sorry if I offended anyone.

I chose Moss over 870 because

1) the tang safety is easier to reach
2) the action release is easier to reach . I shoot left handed.
3) it is just like me--it's cheap and it rattles.

the manufacturers may have different names, but you are looking for a short 18 to 20 inch barrel in a plain-Jane gun." home defense" usually will communicate it to the clerk or gun dealer.

Nothing wrong will 20 gauge IF that is all you can handle or already own one, except you will probably have to buy online to get buckshot. If at all possible, try low recoil in a 12 gauge first, which you will also probably have to buy online.

I predict: somebody, is going to get wise and offer a 20 low recoil buckshot. Just too many people are switching over to shotguns for home defense to pass up the market. i hope is is somebody with a track record like Federal.
