WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. -- Authorities are investigating a deadly shooting in which they said a neighbor tried to help a woman.

The incident was reported Monday morning on Friedland Church Road off Ridgewood Road.

Officials with the Forsyth County Sheriff's Office said Lyndon Doyle Ball, 41, went to the home of Amy Armbruster and broke into the house.

The woman escaped and went to the home of neighbor Roger Ledford. Ball then broke into that home, and Ledford fatally shot Ball, according to invesigators.

"At the first house where the break-in occurred, there was evidence of some type of flammable liquid that had been poured inside the residence," said Capt. Brad Stanley.

Neighbors said the woman was smart to run next door.

No details were released about the relationship of Ball and the woman.

----------------------------------------------------------------------

11 o'clock news reported that the woman awoke to the sound of gunfire. Apparently the BG breached the front door with a shotgun. No charges filed against the 2nd homeowner. Click on "Video: authorities probe deadly shooting" for more info and a neighbor/sheeple interview.

A good reminder that you could be next even if you're minding your own business.

What would make this story truely great would be if the female in the first house was an anti-gun lib that at the first sign of personal danger ran to her pro-gun neighbor for protection.

Shooting

It actually happened in Advance, which makes it a little strange that Forsyth County would be involved in a Davie County incident. Here's the link to the write-up. Pay attention to paragraph 9. They're unsure whether it's a self-defense shooting???

Ah well. Read on...

EDIT TO ADD:

Noticed the address where the shooting occurred. I believe that's in Forsyth County, near the Forsyth/Davie line.

Deputies searched both houses???Sounds like maybe there's more to it than meets the eye...

As per 1911Tuner's link above: http://www.journalnow.com/servlet/Sa...=1149188270156

...the first deputy arrived nine minutes after the call was dispatched.

The first call was dispatched at 9:41 a.m. as a 911 hangup, which is handled as an urgent call but not one that requires blue lights and siren.

Dispatchers were able to reach Armbruster, and the call was changed to a disturbance.

After a third call, the incident was classified as a break-in in progress, Stanley said, which is an emergency call.

As Armbruster was on the phone, the signal was dropped, apparently as she went to Ledford's house with a cordless phone, Stanley said.

After that, Ledford called police.

Lessons:
Distance is your friend, move, scoot, engage without engaging, evade,do something...don't just be a stationary target.
NINE minutes seems like Eternity - Many in Eternity died in less than time.

Cops with Mops

1. Cops don't need guns; they need mops. As my CCW instructor (the country SWAT commander) said, literally about 90% of the time, when the cops arrive, they just do clean up, take a report and go to the next crime already done been committED (past tense).

2. Take away the cops' guns and give them to the citizens. If every citizen owned a gun and knew how to use it, crime would eventually drop. Repeat crime would be basically non-existent, and the stupid criminals would be "taken care of". I dare say we could even slowly empty the prisons.

3. We could tatoo a big target right on them so when they break in, less experienced gun owners know where to aim. If they choose serve in active duty, say Iraq and Iran, we could then pay to have the tatoo removed, reinstate their right to own guns and honor them with a ceremony for heroism.

Well I wouldn't read to much into it based on the fact that they searched both houses , they are both crime scenes and it all ended with a dead body .

I think the searches are simple SOP in a case like this .

.

Give every citizen a gun huh . I love hearing that so much , it implies that the criminals aren't citizens now doesn't it ?

Shooting

I just found out that this one is a little close to home. Doyle Ball is the oldest son of a friend that I haven't seen in several years. Worked with him for a time, and he ran a gas station in partnership with another guy from the same neighborhood in Winston, over on Country Club Road. Haven't seen him since he (Doyle) was about 16 years old, but we always called him "Dobie" or "Dobe" because he didn't like to be called by his real name...which I had forgotten...and he sorta looked like Dobie Gillis.
(For all you who are old enough to remember or have caught the reruns on Nick at Nite.)

Damned sad when people let their lives get so screwy that they do things like this. I'd heard from his daddy that he'd been in some trouble about 10 years ago, directly related to his drinking problems that started in his late teens. Guess it all caught up with him the other day...

Location

1911 Tuner, this incident was actually in Southern Forsyth County near the Union Cross area just south of WS city limits if you are familiar with that....Sort of just north of the new Dell Plant and not near Davie County at all. I think I read or seen on TV news report that the suspect may have lived in Davie.

re:

Hi ggarf,

I was thinkin' of Hope Church Road that runs parallel to 158 into Clemmons.

Anyway...I made some more calls, and Ball is indeed who I thought he was. I lost track of the family, and down't know where they are now. The obituary will probably tell. I feel bad for the family, even though I know that he brought this on himself. They're good people and I know they're heartsick right now.

You sound like you know the area pretty well. Must be close by.
I just moved down here last year from King. Grew up in Winston.

Man killed after trying to force his way into 2 houses, say police

Journal Staff Report

A man who tried to force his way into two houses on Friedland Church Road was shot dead this morning, a spokesman for the Forsyth County Sheriff's Office said today.

The sheriff's office is investigating the shooting and did not release the names of anyone involved. Sheriff's officers were trying to obtain search warrants this afternoon.

Sheriff's Capt. Brad Stanley said a man tried to force his way into the front door of 2804 Friedland Church Road, where a woman who may have been his former girlfriend lives. The man shot off the locks of the front door with a shotgun and entered the house, he said.

Stanley said he was not sure whether the woman was alone in the house. A car and two trucks sat in the driveway outside the house yesterday afternoon.

The woman ran to a house next door at 2808 Friedland Church Road, where a married couple lives, Stanley said. The man followed her and shot off the lock of a side door of the neighbor's house. A man inside the second house killed the attacker with a shotgun, Stanley said.

Authorities have yet to say whether the shooting was in self-defense.

"The homeowner was fearful of what was going on and shot and killed him," Stanley said. The man who killed suffered a single gunshot wound to the chest.

He will not be charged. That line is the normal line from the DA here until the investigation is complete. The article doesn't go into the "interesting" particulars like the gasoline the DOA spread all over the womans house or the simple fact that he had some type of device on his body that made EMS back out.

Update

Calls early today that finally got me the the right number to put me in touch with the family...and it's not who I thought. "Darren" is alive and well...or as well as he can be while doing 6 months for yet another DUI. Three different people also had the wrong information. I guess a lot slips the memory in 25 years.

Good to know...I wasn't in the right frame of mind for a funeral.

That is not too far from where my sister-in-law's family lives near the booming metropolis of Wallburg.

Sounds like she had quite a good neighbor in Mr. Ledford.

1911,

Glad to here it was the wrong guy, 6 months for a DUI is a heck of a lot better than 6ft under for home invasion. I hope the kid gets straightend out before he learns a more permanent lesson.
