Home made vs Swiss speed test (edited)

OK....this has been rather difficult....I wanted to make sure I was loading as accurate a load as I could so the test would be fair and I have never thought you could get exact measure from using a flask and spout I weighed the powder with a digi scale...(which turned out to be far from accurate) with the first go round...which I decide 25 grains by weight would be a good load for the test...well it was for my powder and swiss but 25 grains of goex would not fit in the dang cylinder of the .36....crappo...so the next day I tried again...this time using a Lee grain scale and dropped it back to 15 grains so there would be room for the goex this time....well it worked but it didnt...the 15 grains fit just fine but the ball did not really get as good of compression with my powder and the Swiss as it did with the Goex which is a bit larger in size....soooo as it turned out the Goex (with more compression) was actually faster....geez what a pain!...so anyway the speeds I got with mine and the Swiss I believe to be pretty accurate since they had the same compression...the Goex being bigger had an unfair advantage...that being said...check out the video..

I had the damn sizes reversed in my head on grain sizes at the time...too many things going on at once I guess...dur..lol (time to re-edit!) anyway the main objective was the speed test between mine and swiss so I did get that done...the 2f test was an after thought...that is my "Goonerized" 51 btw....and thanks for watching!

I like your videos Brushhippie. I never did quite get the black powder pucks and all that. But it's not your fault. I'm about as slow as a 16 year old second grader sometimes.

Sorry about the mix up guys the vid is back up....
stubbi...in order to measure the powder by volume as the commercial powders do you must compress it into pucks and then grind it and screen it to size.

It's an "eye-opener" to see how much the compression affects velocity. Who would have guessed that Goex would out-perform Swiss?

Steve...this shows me that...basically all these powders are fairly equal and the difference lies in the size shape and how the granules settle in together..PLUS...compression. Rich and Tony are both calling for me to do the test by volume so...out to the range we go....SCIENCE! I love it! (there ARE teachers out there that would argue that!)

How much of your results could you "feel"? What about milling yours to the - as close to as - the same as theirs? Do you sift out anything smaller than the grain or f your trying for? I don't in my cannon charges and often wonder what the difference may be if I were to. The problem is in a 6oz charge there is a fair amount of 2,3,4f mixed in as a result of corning. I used to sift this but I ended up with a lot f size stuff. I'm sure it makes some kind of difference but I'm not for sure. Trying to chrono some shots. If I find the rest of the thing i'll have some kind of idea. Still, your vid's are fun and educational. Thanks, Last, ya otta get a cannon!

I have got mine now I think just about as close as I can get it to Swiss without tumbling it after sizing..(which I do not plan to do at the moment) I meant to add this to the last video but I am about to do another and i will add it to that one BUT...it will give you and idea...mine is left Swiss top right Goex bottom right...(this is actually a previous batch which was slightly larger than what I have now)

The circled are ideal size...which is what I ended up with

The larger pieces go back into the grinder and the smaller stuff that falls though the screen goes back to be re-pucked...I am getting down below 20% to re-puck now...and I am quite happy.

is the Swiss 2 or 3F? The Goex looks larger than yours and the Swiss. Actually, if you did a gradation with sand sieves the Swiss is pretty close to one smaller size, the Goex is pretty close to one larger size and yours is a mixture of both sizes.

Hey Dicky! Yea I have refined it somewhat since that pic but that will give you a good idea the difference between the 2f Goex and Swiss....(the Swiss it 2f). agreed it does appear that way...good to see ya Bud.
