Homemade gun lube

Depends on how much you clean and lube.

Im usually cleaning 3-4 guns a week and they all get lubed each time they are cleaned (I clean every time I shoot).

I bought that bottle of Mobile One about 5 years ago now, and Ive filled the little needle oiler bottle I use maybe a half dozen times since. I still have 3/4's plus of the quart bottle left.

And I probably paid less for that quart of Moble One, than what most of the gun specific oils and lubes cost for a few ounces.

Came here to say this. So benign you could practically drink the stuff. Motor oils are not Non-toxic.

The only gun related lube I've ever drank is Black Rifle Coffee. It helps make things slide right on out, if you know what I'm sayin'.

As far as petrochemicals in my firearms? If I'm afraid of them, it's time for me to quit shootin' lead projectiles.

I found what appeared to be surface rust on a few pistols I was trying Frog Lube on, but closer examination showed that it was just oxidized FL. After about a year of trying it on my pistols, I decided it wasn't any better than CLP, except for the smell. I went back to CLP, which has served me well since the '80s.

I do use different products for deep cleaning ( simple green) and have used any grease I had handy for things like slides, and I'm currently trying 'Cherry Balm', which comes as a grease or an oil consistency, which seems to be a blend of Mobil 1 grease and oil. It works fine, but I might not be continuing it's use, as while it does seem a bit more slippery than CLP, it stains more.

I always end up back with CLP, as while it's not a great cleaner, lubricant, or preservative, it works well enough.

FrogLube also ranked highest in anti rust testing, plus it wasn't toxic.

I have frogs and Coconuts(palms) in my back yard. I can make all the Frog Lube anyone could ever want!

At the range we are very green minded. We keep some frogs in a nice cage with everything a frog could want, when we need lube we just grab one, rub him on the slide and put him back!

What in the World would be the purpose of making your own gun "lube"??

Just in case your medieval amulet does not keep the evil spirits from your firearm.

Usually these home made lubes are mixtures of Marvel Mystery Oil, engine oil, and transmission fluid. Sometimes greases are used

These really don't hurt, and if the user gets the consistency they want, its harmless fun.

I would not use ATF as lube, not because it isn't wonderful lube, but because in this application it's no better than dozens of others that don't stink or stain.

Lubrication requirements in firearms are so minimal versus the requirements in machinery, bearings, transmissions, etc, than almost anything you can buy will exceed what you can benefit from in a firearm.

LubriPlate was hi tech in 1940; you can't buy grease that poor on the shelf today.

Remember FrogLube? It was perfectly functional firearms lube, and worked fine everywhere except the extreme cold. . . it was fractionated (low molecular weight) coconut oil.

Pick a lube that's inexpensive, and doesn't drain, stink, or stain.

This ^^^^. Especially stink, using a smelly gun oil in your hunting rifle contradicts all the field experience deer hunters have built up over the last 30 years. If you carry concealed using dripping automotive oils that stain clothing in an office which has no need to know wouldn't be helpful. And for all the cost per ounce figuring I've done, it's meh - most of us aren't running 10K rounds a year thru every gun we own, the lube expense is nothing. I switched to Lucas after the owner of a Vega full auto rental range suggested he was impressed with it's ability to stay on the weapon and not get on his customers clothing. Something I wish CLP would have done. But at least the banana smell covered up some of the other when 30 guys came in from the field.

Thanks for all the "wonderful" replies. I finally had a friend who gave me the formula. For those that may want to know it is 75% ATF as in automatic transmission fluid and 25% Polydyn. Mods you can close this anytime you so choose. Mac
