Homeowner shoots 'ninja' who attacked wife

Jim Doyle, Chronicle Staff Writer

Monday, February 27, 2006

(2-27) 13:19 PST HEALDSBURG -- An armed man wearing a black, ninja-style mask was shot to death by a Healdsburg man this morning after he attacked the man's wife outside their home and chased her inside, police said.

The shooting happened about 7:30 a.m. at the end of Sunset Drive, a semi-rural street on the east side of town.

The woman was about to take the couple's two Wheaton terrier dogs for a walk when the masked man jumped her outside her garage, police said. The woman struggled, broke away and ran screaming into the house, with the attacker in pursuit.

Her screams awoke her husband. The man, whom police identified only as a man in his 60s, "grabbed their handgun, probably a .357 ... and fired more than one shot," Police Chief Susan Jones said.

The intruder "had what looked like a firearm in his hand," Jones said. He died at the scene. His identity has not been released.

"The husband is fine. He's uninjured," Jones said. "The wife is being treated for a head injury that she sustained sometime during the struggle, but she's going to be fine."

Jones said the intruder may have been hiding behind some garage cans, waiting for someone to emerge from the home.

The chief said the incident "is completely out of the blue" for the town.

"Actually, our crime has been down this year. This is really unusual," she said. "It's really frightening if this is a random act."

What kind of dog is a Wheaton Terrier? Can't be much of a dog if it won't protect it's owner. Probably a cat in disguise. My two cattle dogs, while nice enough to strangers, would become very, very annoyed with anyone who attacked a family member. Even people known to them can get a warning growl for acting too agressive towards a family member.

Quiet country town

I am about 45 miles from there and while it explodes on the weekends with upper class snobs it has a population of lower class as well. I know there is bay area gang action there and all the problems that go with it. Sonoma county is now thought to be Bay area. With the explosive growth comes problems and more things like this to happen.

Wheaton Terriers are ferocious

you can imagine how frightened the perp was when he met this dog!:neener:

I'm thinking that "garbage can ninjas" are kind of out of the blue for most towns.

Actually, that photo is not a Wheaton Terrier. It's actually a terrier/poodle cross (the "poodle" may actually have been a Bichon Frise, by the looks of the dog).

This is a Wheaton Terrier:

I guess those folks can now expect to be shunned by their "liberal" neighbors for defending themselves ... and ... and ... for having a gun!

Well done, but hopefully in the future the wife will be the one who makes the shot with her new CCW.

I believe this incident happened in CA. We actually have good self defense laws here but CCWs are hard to get in many counties. They make you have a reason to get one. Most of the time Self Defense doesnt count as a valid reason. :cuss:

Check this story out.. happened right here in San Diego.

Guy shoots a bum who attacked him with a knife. They determine the shooting to be self defense, but they're gonna charge the shooter with carrying a concealed weapon without a permit. :scrutiny:

Gotta love a hppy ending, I'm glad everyone is OK. but what if the perp turns into a ninja zombie. What gun for one of them? (My guess is a JHP filled with gri-gri dust.):neener:

I tell yah, it is a sad day for journalism when there is more information on the DOGS than there is on the A) suspect, B) victim, C) tools used in the crime, and D) tools used to stop the crime.

Plus, a random act isn't all that frightening (after all, it is random), but a PURPOSEFUL series of home invasions IS TERRIFYING!!

Excuse me, chief, but ... would it not be more frightening if it were NOT a random act?

they shoot ninjas there, don't they? can't be THAT liberal

A real Ninja would have had a sword and used it to deflect the bullets. They train for this. Their teacher fires at them with a mini gun. This is reason so few Ninja high failer rate.:neener:
