Anyone here know what the law says in Hong Kong about carrying a folding knife? I have to travel there for business in a couple months, and want to be able to carry something if its legal. Thanks.

The Latest Military directive is NO edged instruments to include Leatherman type pocket tools to be carried in public. Don't know what the local law says, but the Military generally piggy-backs civilian regulations.

Hong Kong is very safe overall as long as you exercise common sense.
Been there more times than I can count and never had an issue.

Lived there a spell and still get there every so often. Really safe place, no muggers, only troublemakers are drunken "Gwailohs" (foriegners). Bar brawls are settled with fists.

Your biggest threat will be pickpockets working the crowds, but HK has a tourist crime compensation program whereby you can make a claim for reimbursement if robbed.

If there ever is an altercation with local criminal elements (Triads), concealable knife will not be of any help. HK Triad members will be many, will be better armed and will swarm you. As long as you don't go around picking fights with locals, HK is a very polite and safe place.

HK's general law makes illegal any "sharp or pointed weapon" which is so open for interpretaion that you really don't want to get caught importing anything.

If you really want a knife, buy one there at any of a million tourist shops and throw it away when you leave. Suggest surefire/maglite flashlight to carry instead.

When I was in HK, everyone (and I mean EVERYONE) carried umbrellas. A good stout umbrella with a straight wooden handle makes a fine weapon.

I remember seeing someone selling a "Tactical Umbrella" (don't laugh) that actually had a solid steel shaft and was so strong you could stand on it between 2 chairs.

edit: Found it! I'm thinking about buying one of these; I travel a lot.

Bring your brain and you should be fine. I recently went to a third world area and I managed to survive with a SAK and my grey matter.
