Hi all,

I was wondering if anyone has used Hoppe's Elite Gun Cleaner or Gun Oil on their shotguns, and what you think of them. How does the gun cleaner compare to other solvent-type cleaners? Also how does the oil compare to other oils like RemOil or CLP? (I know CLP does more than just lube.) I got some of these and cleaned/lubed my new 870P with them. Since it's a new gun, it wasn't a good test of cleaning after extensive range use, but the oil seemed to lubricate the action quite well. Thanks.

Chris

Bwah! I get to be the first to answer here as well :)

I found that the Hoppe's Elite cleaner, even after drying, emulsified whatever oil I applied thereafter, and I was worried about its effects on the integrity of the oil film, so I never purchased it again. Never tried the HE oil.

Effective cleaner for sure. Hoppe's No. 9 works just as well, just not as quickly in my view.

I bought some of the Hoppe's Elite cleaner for my stainless Ruger Vaqueros to get the black off the front of the cylinders. It does not work well for that. I was disappointed. Luckily, I only bought a tiny spray bottle. I'll stick to #9 or Breakfree CLP.

I too just purchased a spray bottle of Hoppes Elite Gun Cleaner. The bottle is worth more than the product. I too was trying to get the black rings off the front of the cylinder of a stainless revolver. The gun is brand new and was only fired 10 times ( 2 - 5 shot cyl ). After 7 applications, brushing and all, this is as good as it got.

This is what the advertisment says...

You make up your mind... I'll never buy it again...

i havent even heard of this stuff, probably since i havent bought cleaner since the late 90's. how much is the stuff?

I still like #9. I buy it by the quart. I seem to go through a quart every 6 to 8 months. I hear there are "faster" solvents but never have tried them.

ATAShooter... Solvent and a brush didn't get that fouling off? Wow!

ATAshooter- I concur. I bought it based on their marketing hype. It did not perform. I am disappointed as well. Have not tried other suggestions of "Flitz", a lead removal cloth (?), and a pink school eraser. I've just learned to live with the rings.

Hoppe’s Elite is relabeled MilPro7 which is a state-of-the-art metal cleaner/treatment used extensively by professional organizations for gun care and a variety of other cleaning purposes. I started using it 3 years ago when I was looking for a biodegradable cleaner that would do the job and keep the environment and your liver healthy. It has kept all my firearms in great condition although I agree it doesn’t clean powder burns from stainless as well as some of the more caustic petroleum-based cleaners.

The best thing I have found for removing powder rings from the front of SS chlinders is Rem Bore Cleaner----which has a little bit of abrasive in it----a little of it on an old cloth works wonders!

Just wanted to offer suggestion for those of you trying to remove powder rings from front of cylinder. Get some FLITZ. You will not be disappointed.
