I am trying to find a good gun oil/lube for my pistols. I like Break Free and Rem Oil; but I find they put off a strong odor which I wondering might linger and spook game during a hunt. The local gun store has Hoppe's Gun Lubricant and it doesn't have any strong after odor.

Anyone have any luck with Hoppe's Gun Lubricant?

I used to use Hoppes exclusively for years. A couple of years ago, I started using Ballistol. Honestly, both work great as lubricants. As for the smell ... well, good luck finding one that doesn't.

...and besides, isn't a prime part of successful hunting the ability to not put yourself upwind from your prey?

Mobil 1 synthetic motor oil doesn't smell very bad or powerfully, at least not to my nose. And I know that it is as good as or better than any "gun oil" out there.

To me, BreakFree has a smell, but it's not very noticeable. I've never used RemOil. Are you using the aerosol versions of these products or the liquid? I suspect the aerosol versions have more smell than the liquid.

I'm currently using SLIP 2000. I notice no smell with SLIP 2000 at all.

I also use Ballistol, mentioned above, that has a very strong smell in either the aerosol or liquid versions. The smell does dissipate with time though.

I believe Hoppe's Elite Gun Oil would be comparable to "Rem oil". I have both, and the Hoppe's has little odor that I can tell. Of course, I use it so sparingly, I am not appreciating the problem. I wondered if you meant a cleaner rather than a lubricant. Hoppe's #9 certainly has an odor.
