So I just got a new 45-70, and plan to reload for it using hornady's new FTX "gummy tipped" bullets.

Does anyone have any experience with this combo? is there anything different than loading any other strait walled cartridge?

any favorite loads?

anything special about the "flex tip" bullets that i need to know about?

According to another site, .45-70 LEVERevolution brass is shorter than standard .45-70 brass. I know their .357 Magnum LEVERevolution brass is a full .035" shorter than either Remington or Winchester. I assume this was done to keep the OAL within SAAMI specs.

Case length is shorter, 2.04 vs 2.095 for std 45-70. If you load the FTX in a standard case the OAL is too long to cycle in the 1895

From Hornady Site http://www.hornady.com/assets/files/ftx_load_data/45-70_1895-marlin_ftx.pdf

Just for grins I loaded some in standard length cases and trimmed the gummy tip a bit with a razor blade and they worked fine with no loss of accuracy but this was at 50 yds.

I ran the factory stuff over my chrony and got 1910fps avg from my 22" bbl. 50 grains of RL-7 gave me an avg of 2043fps
