Hornady 55 gr V Max Bullets in 223

I was wondering which of theses powders I have would be the best match for the bullets Im using them with.I have accurate 2230,2015,or Hodgdon H4198, BL-C(2) and how many grains.

A good reloading manual would help out a lot in picking powders. Having said that, everyone has their personal preference, but 223 Rem can use a lot of different powders with good results. I would pick your BL-C2 from your list and work it up. Others may suggest differently.

AA-2015 will probably give the highest velocity, followed by AA-2230, followed by BL-C(2) which is getting a little slow with 55 grain bullets. It does better with heavy bullets in .223.

H-4198 is too fast burning for the .223 with medium to heavy bullet weights, although it works pretty well with 36 - 45 grain bullets.

I Thank You for the help.I went back the the chart and only found 35 and 60 grain in V-Max so I guess I'll try 2015 using 22 grains and see how that turns out.

I would start with the AA2230, There are so many great powders for the .223.

Any of those would work for 55gr .223.

AA2230 measures great and covers most bullets for .223.

Load up in increments of .3gr.

2015 shot very well for me in .222 Mag. (The near ballistic equivalent of the .223), but so did H335 and IMR 4895.

I load at the higher end with AA2230, accurate, meters great, gives good velocity, relatively clean. Anything heavier than 55g I'd use something else. Those V-max shoot awesome, I load cheapo 55gr FMJ's for plinking and the Vmax for accuracy, and small critters.

I looked on the Hodgdon site and they listed data for Titegroup at Max 3.1 for a 55 gr HDY FMJ..... I was wondering if anyone has tried it? Am I reading it wrong?

No not reading it wrong, I see that now too.

If they say it works, it works.
It would not operate any semi-auto action so would have to be manually loaded each shot.

I sure haven't tried it though.
I use .22 rim-fires for that level of performance.

If I were to download .223 brass to say .22 Mag levels (which I have done in the past), I would use another powder besides Titegroup.

If you do it I suggest turning your muzzle to the sky and then lowering the barrel before each shot to get the tiny charge against the primer each time. Titegroup is touted as being position insensitive, but I have found it to be average in that dept. Maybe they meant it burns completely regardless of position. That it does seem to do well. It is in the velocity department that it varies quite a bit depending on where in the case it is.

It is fun to shoot .22 mag to .22 Mag+ loads from .22 Hornet, .222, or .223 cases.

One of these days I am just going to buy a .22 Mag rifle and be done with it though. I have a pistol now, just gotta get the rifle.

I like AA2230 and AA2460. Surprisingly, IMR-4064 has been giving me very good results with 55-60gr bullets in .223.
