Hornady dies and shell holder

Does Hornady dies no longer automatically come with a shell holder when purchased new? I thought they always did, but maybe this was never the case or this was discontinued recently.

Lee are the ones which come to my mind that came with a shell holder. Don't have any Hornady to check.

American series dies come with a shell holder. Custom and Match sets do not.

They do? Didn’t know that - I never bought a set. None of the Hornady sets I bought came with one. They let you choose what fits your application best.

Yes, the American series do come with a shell holder. First set of dies I bought were Hornady American series. Took them home and opened them up, excited as all getout because I was going to finally learn to reload. Upon inspection they had a few small pits inside. I took them back for a refund, and bought some RCBS dies and shell holder that I still use.

I have since bought Hornady custom grade dies, and have had zero issues with any of them, as well as RCBS dies.

Not bashing Hornady. I use and like several of their products. Maybe I just got a bad set, it happens with every manufacture from time to time.

Yup. The dies are decent Hornady quality, just not quite finished as the other Hornady dies. They also dont have the seater with the sleeve on it, which I think is one of the big draws of the Hornady dies.

This thread prompted me to order a set of Hornady custom grade dies for .223. I like the idea of the seating guide sleeve. I'll set them up for my Savage axis. And i'll use my RCBS set for the mini 14.

I have 2-3 shell holders of every caliber I load. Mostly because I take them out of the press, dont put them away, then go buy another in frustration. Then about 20 minutes after I get the new one, I find the old one.

I have all my shell holders on a magnet strip. Makes less chance of misplacing them.

I have a plastic shoe storage box that contains the die set, shell holder, spare stems, and all other accessories for that caliber in one place. Also dummy rounds for die setup and partial boxes of bullets. This keeps me quite organized as long as I put things back where they belong LOL. All my Hornaday dies were purchased used and as such can't remember if they came with shell holders or not.

This creates sort of a problem. Shipping is so bloody high these days, it puts you in a real bind for little things like this and is an advantage Amazon has with free shipping.

I did solve the problem, sort of, by buying a set of Hornady dies on clearance to get free shipping. At least these were less than they are going for used on eBay.
