Any LNL owners that reload .40 I was loading some rounds tonight and noticed that powder is bouncing out of the cases and onto the shellplate and press. I was using W231. Just curious if this is normal. Tried slowing up my motion and speeding up. Nothing changed and powder still bounces out. My bench is sturdy and my press does not flex at all. I believe the timing is spot on and is not the problem if their is one. I have not called Hornady thought I would pick the fine minds here first. It isnt that big of a deal and hasnt caused any problems so far as I clean the press after 500 rounds to keep shellplate and primer slide spotless. Any help would be appreciated

Mine hasn't done that, but I do know they can be a little jerky as the shellplate drops down into the indents.

I havnt noticed this ever happen to me before, silly question but do ya have the pistol powder drop spacer in? Worth a shot I guess if you have already checked out the operating speed.

I had the same problem with 231 and 9mm cases. My cure was 2 changes. First I quit using 231 and second I use a very small amount of very thick silicone grease in the ball detents. The plate stops a little smoother now.
I won't say 231 is the main issue here as I've had the same problem with max charges of Unique in 9mm.
I'm now loading 40's with both Titegroup and Unique and haven't had any problems.
Hope this helps!

I have an LNL and load a lot of 9mm with 231 and 40 with HS-6. I usually get a flake or two bouncing out, but not enough to really make much difference.

Same here, bounces out a little after powder charge and powder cop stations, but I keep a little paint brush handy and simply sweep any escapees into a little tray to be reincorporated back into the powder charge station at the end of the run. One thing I have noticed is that the ball detents are still "snappy" and this may be due to how new the press is. Perhaps after a few thousand more rounds it will settle down ... I'm planning on taking showmebob's advice and applying a little grease to the ball detents. The only problem with this is when you run a round through and forget your forward press and don't seat a primer. Then when you have to break the press down to clean it all out ... the grease will trap all the powder and make a pretty good mess, albeit contained.

This is quite common with short brass and powders that fill the case. Confirm that the indexing is right. If it's off so that it stops then the detents pull it the rest of the way (forward or backwards) you will get some powder to shake out. Make sure you use the same ram speed as your operating when you set the indexing paws. Since I have a brass feeder on mine I will place my little finger lightly on the shell plate as it rotating while I place a bullet into the charged case. This dampens the shell rotation and basicly stop the powder from being shaken out. But in any case the few flakes that do get shaken out will not impact the charge. I do keep a small brush and a can of Duster to blow away any spills if needed.

Thanks

Thanks all for the answers. I would say my powder problem is normal and appreciate all your help.

As posted above, lightly drag a finger on the plate as it gets ready to come around. Works perfectly. My hand is already there with another case, so it's no trouble at all.
