Anyone ever shoot Hornady Lt magnum rounds in an AR-10?
Standard muzzle velocity for 150 grain bullet is 2820 fps at the muzzel and the lt magnum rounds are 3000 fps at the muzzel. Will it damage the gas system?

Anyone shooting these rounds in the AR-10 or shooting handloads of same muzzle velocity. Please let me know if your rifle suffered ill effects.

i have shot about 10 rounds thru mine and it groups well!.......just wondered it it will damage the rifle,

Hornady reccomends they not be shot in semis, although the pressure is supposedly the same as standard ammo the pressure curve is quite different and may damage semi auto mechanisms. Sorry I can't help with experience on them, I don't shoot them through any of my semis.

Called Armilite Asked them

I emailed armilite a few days ago and asked them about shooting the Lt mag rounds in it. They said that the rounds are designed for bolt rifles and not to shoot them. So i emailed em back and asked have you actually tested the rounds in the rifle? They said " No we have not tested but we ...Think... it wouldnt be a good idea.

So Im just asking because some you guys on here are prolly smarter than they are at Armilite.

Two things:

1. A standard pressure .308 cartridge will take down bull elk, and certainly anything smaller, with reliability.

2. The use of unapproved ammo will certainly leave you without the lifetime warranty that Armalite gives you. Your call.

The box of Hornady Light Magnum in 06 I have, there is a warning on the box that reads "NOT FOR USE IN SEMI-AUTO RIFLES". The box I have is the older type though.

Keep fishin` and I`m sure you can find somebody that will tell you what you want to hear.:banghead:

Both Hornadies warning NOT to fire them in gas semi-autos, and the rifle manufactures trust in Hornady knowing their ammo and takeing their word for it that one shouldn`t use it, aught to give a clue as to the wether or not you should use it.

No, the pressures aren`t higher with it, (Lite mag ammo)

Yes, the pressure is held longer in the barrel and is higher then a standard load farther down the tube.

Yes, gas systems are designed to operate in a specific range of pressure. The Lite Mag stuff is likely out of that "pressure window"

Yes, too much pressure in the gas system will cause trouble.

Your rifle may take it for 1 rd or maybe 1000 but sooner or later you will have a problem. The problem may just happen from stress on the rifle, and occure with std ammo, and not while fireing the heavy stuff.

Thanks for the info guys

Thanks for the info guys. Reason im fishin is, i traded some ammo for the lt magnum ammo from a gun i sold. Just lookin to see if anyone out there knows if it will damage the gun. Since Armilite just "says not to shoot lt ammo in the gun". Looks like they would at least Test it to see what it will do. Cause 150grains at 3000 fps is better than 2820 especially if you barrel is 20 inches instead of 24.

Sure would hate to see the results of a catastrophic failure of an AR-10, but could you videotape it for our entertainment if you do blow it up?;)

Yes, we would all be castigating you for years after that...

Trade the ammo for something else you might find useful.
