On the forums, I ran into another reloader who was having problems with Hornadys recent batch of .405 Winchester brass. This is significant because no other companies currently make brass in that caliber. As it turns out, the problem was with the rim thickness. It was slightly thicker than it should have been and had some difficulty being put into two different priming tools (RCBS and Lee).

I wrote to Hornady, not to request replacements or berate them but to let them know of a possible problem. I culled the really bad pieces and filed the rest of them down so I got the majority of the brass to work regardless.

Their immediate response thanked me for the email and that they would look into it.

Out of the blue, I get an email last week from Hornady requesting the lot number of the incorrect brass. Unfortunately, I no longer had the lot number but a representative still offered replacement brass!

Customer service is unlike any other in the gun industry. Thank you Hornady.

Sir/Ma'am,

I recently purchased 100 pieces of your recently manufactured .405 Winchester brass. I'm sure you're aware that this brass is not cheap nor is it regularly available.

Once I received it, I was surprised to see that it wouldn't fit in the shellholder of my Lee Priming Tool. I assumed that the shellholder was defective and proceeded to utilize my RCBS priming tool. The brass wouldn't fit that shellholder either.

After careful inspection, it's apparent that the rim thickness of the brass was out of spec. I had to remove 5 pieces due to incorrect dimensions.

I wanted to advise you of this condition.

Thank You,

esheato

Give me the lot number of the 405 brass that you are having a problem with. I think the problem may have been on a trimmer that cut a radius on the head.
Also send me you name address and phone number. I can send you a replacement box of cases.

Sir,

Unfortunately, I no longer have the boxes so I cannot provide the lot number.

I removed the more difficult cases, but I still loaded the rest. Some of them still stick in the shellholder and I have to twist them in under hand pressure.

I had originally purchased 100 (2 boxes) and the problems surfaced throughout.

I appreciate your offer and accept the replacements. Your company has always been superb in their customer service and I won't hesitate to use and recommend your products again.

Thank you,

I put the order in the computer but the show out of stock so it will be coming as soon as there is inventory.

What few times I have contacted Hornady, it has always been a pleasure talking to people who realize that customer service is important. They have been helpful in answering my questions and have corrected one problem that I had. That is why I use and recommend their products.

Just relating some follow-up information.

I had completely forgot about the problems I had with some of Hornadys 405 Winchester brass. I had also forgot about their promise to send me some when they manufactured a new batch.

Out of the blue today (keep in mind the original email was three months ago), I received a package from Hornady. Inside was 50 pieces of brand new brass. No letter or anything...just brass.

Needless to say, a thank you letter has already been sent to them.

I just had a positive experience with Hornady. I had a box of their recalled LeveRevolution .30-30 ammo, and they sent UPS to pick it up and then had the replacement in my hands 6 days later.
