Friends, I just purchased the NEW Hornady Taper Crimp/Seating die in .45 ACP from Hornady and am curious about its functionality.

Has anybody used this die and what are your observations and recommendations?

I need to seat and crimp in the same step as I use a RCBS lockout die and bullet feeder on by LNL progressive.

I had to order this die from Hornady as none of the big houses offer it (Midway, MidSouth, Grafs, etc...)

Thanks...

I have one, it works great. Just follow the directions for set up and you'll be cranking 'em out in no time.

The idgits at Hornady don't use a proper taper crimp ledge in their auto seaters. It is a 45ish degree ledge, where a taper crimp is around 5 to 10ish degrees. It roll crimps pretty well, but IMHO is unsatisfactory for taper crimping. If all the cases are pretty close in length, and you set it just right, it can certainly remove the bell, but easily over crimps. I have a couple of Hornady seaters for auto calibers, and I like them for seating, but use a proper taper crimp die to crimp in a second step after seating.

Pretty much been my experience as well with the Hornady seat/crimp dies.

I have them for 45 and 9mm work just fine. You will need to seat the bullet with your seater die. Just back it off so it does not do any crimp. I use the TC die in position 5.
