hot heavy barrel?

When I am shooting my heavy barrel 308 or 30/06, I fire 1 shot every 2 minutes for 5 rounds, then let it cool down with an open bolt for 15 minutes. I don't want the barrel to get too hot to the touch, and while I might be conservative in my practice, it has served me quite well. Just take 3 rifles/pistols with you and rotate them off the bench or bag you're shooting from, and heat wont be a problem.

Heavy barrels don't heat up as fast as thinner ones but they stay hot longer too

That's because it takes more heat for a thicker barrel to reach the same temperature as the thinner barrel

I'd be more concerned about warping the barrel (temporarily) by having it hot on the side you can't get to and the cold towel on the other.

I do it to speed overall cooling so as to decrease my wait times, not so I can continue shooting while it's cooling
