Hotel gun

EDC for... well, EDC while I'm driving or getting gas or eating or w/e.

Hotel room, something I'm comfortable with.

The last couple of times my "room gun" was a Glock 26. The backup mag was a G19 mag. A G26 (with pinky extension) shoots like a regular pistol to me, but it's small enough to be easy to pack.

My wife used to arrange travel as a major part of her job. She always finds me a decent place to stay, but I'm careful anyway, especially in the parking lots and hallways.

I have my air travel gun. It's a Taurus 85 bought specifically for this purpose. It's loaded with an old load. HBWC loaded backwards. If traveling by auto I carry something of .45 acp persuasion.

If you normally carry a 45, Id just carry what you normally carry.

Ive never understood having different guns for different occasions. I normally carry one gun for everything, the gun I shoot the most in practice, and if for some reason I cant carry it, I go with my BUG for those times I cant carry what I normally do. It gets shot regularly as well, and shoots just as well as what I normally carry.
Im not a "gun of the day" carrier.

I look at the Governor or Judges as a "niche" type gun. If I were to use it, it would be in addition to what I normally have with me. Its not a replacement for it.
My sentiments also....I own 3 handguns, 2 rifles, and 1 shotgun. They each have a purpose, and perform very well. In my life, guns are tools. People will buy almost anything....and these mfgs know it. Make it cool and many will bite. Caveat emptor, my friends.

ROKNSTEVO,,

Different guns make sense for different occasions. On duty, I wear my GLOCK 19, off duty, I do not want to restricted to whatever rules my agency prescribes. I usually carry a mid size- size 9m.m. or .40 S&W with a metal frame under a cover shirt or jacket. I prefer the milder recoil. I shoot better with a mid size gun like the BERETTA 92 Compact, SIG 229 or STOEGER Cougar, either an 8000 in 9m.m. or 8040 in .40 S&W.
When I am in plain clothes, I usually carry a GLOCK 42, as it disappears in my pocket holster.
If I were out in the woods, I would prefer something like a .357 magnum for the extra power.

On my most recent hotel stay, I took my XDS45 loaded with 230gr Gold Dots. I brought along the extended mag and the regular 5-rd mag. I kept the extended mag in the gun while driving and while in the hotel. When going out, I used the 5-rd mag as it conceals better.

I’m sitting in a yurt with my G19 on my side loaded with Underwood defenders. It’s not a hotel but the walls are thin and we have neighbors 30 yards away.

Depending on the hotel penetration may not be a factor. Ricochet in tilt up concrete could be an issue. Then you have to consider where you stand, avoiding the walls where there is a higher frequency of bullets traveling. Hallways tend to funnel them down the sides. You get some cover near the hall but the open balcony or window can be real iffy.

"Hotel" covers a lot of different things, ask that guy who got stuck in Nakatomi Towers. LIke a lot of stuff on gunforums, just take your regular carry gun, there is no special category for each building type. It's the people who are constant. They don't change, don't change your security practices. Just adapt tactics to the construction.

Kind of odd question, but does anyone change their gun or load if you are staying in a hotel? Obviously, over penetration could be an issue. Appreciate any insight folks offer.

No.

My carry is my carry, period.

Hitting the intended target is far more of a concern than overpenetration, since studies show that the vast majority of shootings involve a high percentage of missed shots.

The same .45 that I carry everyday with the same ammo I use everyday. If I need to use it why would I want to tick a bad guy off hitting him with rat shot. Over penetration would be the last thing on my mind...
On that we are in full accord, the bad guy sure isn't there to sell us Girl Scout Cookies, anyone thinking differently, well you are destined to be in a book of hotel-motel death statistics.

I can't imagine a parameter for a hotel/motel which would make carry any different than anywhere else.

I consider travel safer, because it's transitory, in nature. Very few people know you're there, you're not there long, then you're gone.
You just named the EXACT reasons social predators prey on travelers, gives them days, weeks, months and in most cases years, even never sometimes.

I was a traveling salesman for 20 years with mostly rural territories. Thus my motel choices were extremely limited. Many had doors so thin I swear a child could put their fist through the door.

I have had so many incidents mirror those stated in this thread and so many others that I’m not sure if I could the tell the facts straight without intertwining the episodes.

Being a gun addict I always had guns that needed cleaning that I would clean at night. Thus I had plenty of guns. I did NOT trash the towels or sink! I would be back in 4-6 weeks.

Here’s what I learned that worked for me:

1) Stay away from budget Motels, if possible stay at the most expensive one.

2) Completely removed everything of value from the car.

3) If Multi level, always try to get on the top level, no matter how many loads I had to carry.

4) I never told motel employees or strangers what I sold.

5) When I left the room to eat, all of the guns were loaded back up. I did not use traditional gun cases. Most were pistols and were carried in Kids lunch bags or other nondescript bags.

6) My carry gun was left in my pants in case of fire. My “trunk gun” was on the nightstand for when I slept facing the door or on my back. Another handgun was under a pillow for when my back was to the door.

7) When I showered or sat on the toilet, a SS handgun was on the tank bowl. When I shaved or brushed my teeth a SS handgun was on the counter.

This my seem paranoid, but I had too many bad experiences to not be overly cautious. I’m sure I left other things out, it’s been many years since.
No I would never say you are paranoid, since a strong desire to stay alive and unharmed should not be considered " going off the deep end " of things. Myself, fashioned a THICK SASH to wrap around my waist when going to bed at night, WHY?? Because it held securely two 1911'S in pockets designed to do exactly that. As posted before, left side pure lead mild load, right side Win 230 grn JHP quite warm load. Only California state I had high pucker factor incendences in, enough happened I refused to haul into that state.

If your 357 is loaded with Winchester 180 grn Black Talon JHP we would be carrying alike, don't believe a finer bullet has been made than this one!!!!

As Jeff Cooper said, " spray and pray is always forefront in most shooting encounters, don't develop that syndrome " it still seems quite precedent even today.

Forgot to add to be caught and prosecuted, sadly in many many cases the predator ( s ) are never caught.

Jackalope 1,

I doubt I would use any 180 grain bullet in a .357 magnum revolver. The velocity would be too low for me to be sure it would expand in something smaller than a bear, if it expanded at all. Several 158 grain bullets will expand at the 1200 fps range of this weight will still penetrating almost 2 feet. In a carbine, like a HENRY or MARLIN, I might consider the heavy bullet, but I think the mono metal bullets made might be a better choice.

By the way, were would you get any Black Talon? It has been out of production for 2 decades.

A hard cast 158 grain semi-wadcutter would be a good bear protection load, since it will penetrate deeply, but it will act just like the .38 Special lead round nose and zip through a 2 legged predator. So it is not an option for self defense, although these types of loads have a good reputation as a hunting load.

All of the loads that I carry in a handgun are geared to self defense. That means that I need them to expand, penetration is far less important to me.

Or I could just get a bigger gun! I have a S&W model 24, with a 6 inch barrel that would make a good choice for up to black bear protection.

You cannot hesitate to shoot just because you don't know if there is someone in another room. Remember, it is a GUN FIGHT, so gun safety goes out the window.
Just my humble opinion, but this is some of the worst advice I've ever seen in print. This will turn an innocent citizen into a defendant in a criminal homicide investigation. Get real. YMMv but this guy needs to re-evaluate his sanity. Rod

While an older thread I can share an experience where I was less any gun. My choice of hotel/motel gun really depends on where the hotel/motel is.

I was NYC born and raised fortunately during better times. Once a year my wife and I make the sojourn back to NY for an annual party on the beach, old friends and food. Before each trip I do what I call "sanitize" the truck. Making sure I have no ammunition from a previous range trip rolling around, let alone a gun to NY. So here we are at the Long Island Red Roof and all of a sudden there is this banging. The room was shaking so I look out the peep hole and this guy is beating and kicking (including full body slams) on the room door across the hall. I call the front desk and they call the police. Great, Nassau County PD finally shows up about 30 min later. Yes, when seconds count the police are only minutes away. I will say that door took a hell of a beating and no clue what the lunatic's problem was but never have I felt the need to want my gun as bad as that day. Anymore when we go back I gas up in PA and spend as little as possible in NY and NJ.

Anyway what I would carry for hotel/motel really depends on where we are going. Some states nothing. Normally my carry is a nice little 3" 1911 which has proven reliable. My or my wife's life is threatened? I will worry about consequences later of my choice of carry. Half the time we may be transgressing several states staying at several places.
