How accurate are the average pellet guns?

As a kid I (12 or 13 yrs) I could consistantly hit a dime at 10m w/ my Benjamin .177 pistol. Today I can hit a 4" disc at apx. 22m with the Crossman 1377 I picked up 2nd hand.

Wind is a much biggger relative fator with airguns owing to the lower velocities--you can really gage accuracy better indoors in a nice basement range. It is however a kick to fight the wind factor, too.

I've always just been an offhand plinker, but even low cost airguns are usually capable of good results.

It is because beyond the speed of sound diablo pellets become unstable. What you want to do is use heavier ones that drop the feet per second back down below the speed of sound.

The highest foot pounds you can generate while remaining below the speed of sound if you are going for max power.

Spring guns also have a forward backward momentum which can throw accuracy off. Many of the cheapest higher powered ones are those.

However a pellet gun can have precision accuracy better than most firearms at ranges within its limitations.
This is because every shot can be precisely duplicated. The barrel is not getting hotter, the variables are all based on a set amount of air that can be replicated even easier than with a powder charge.

However such a light round (compared to most bullets) going slow will be greatly impacted by the wind, throwing accuracy off at any distance with even the slightest breeze.

For above the speed of sound you can cast bullets of various shapes for improved performance. Drag stabalized pellets just don't cut it anymore.
