How big is this idea?

A post came by on my Facebook feed about a week ago about "The Shot Heard Around the United States." Asking every firearm owner to discharge their weapon on Saturday April 19th, 2014 at 12 noon Eastern Time. Maybe I just have my head in the sand but I don't really see how this will help our cause.

So, we are all supposed to go outside and fire our guns wildly into the air in a mad moment of celebrating the imminent demise of children in the impact zone?

Most won't, it's a fundamental violation of safety and likely a local infraction with a citation.

This sounds like the kind of thing the antigunners are hosting just to prove that Joe Bubba is an idiot no different than third world gun owners who kill each other recklessly. The worst part is that some will likely do it and the literal fallout of injury or death only play to their agenda.

To take the High Road, this is one dumb idea. But, in the interest of an even handed discussion, it would be interesting in a "everyone jump off a three foot step ladder exactly at noon." kind of speculation.

Right - the aftershocks of that are what class it as a weapon of mass destruction event.

Goes back to thinking this is someone's idea of setting up gun owners to pull off a really dumb stunt.

Was this pulled off a parody newsite? Or a late April Fools?

That doesn't sound very responsible. I'm sure some idiot is going to be firing into the air. And If you live in the city are you going to be shooting in the middle of the street?

Posting a picture of Feinkenstein should be considered a violation of human decency. That image gives me immediate nausea and extreme emotional distress.

Guys, the OP never suggested firing into the air. Granted, city residents would have a hard time doing this regardless of muzzle direction. Obviously firing outside of self defense or a county-approved range is illegal in many areas, too. Blanks?

I imagine the intent is to show that there are more gun owners than many realize. If every gun owner in my area did this, it could get loud...

I would have to admit I would be a little freaked out if in the plat near me that everyone went out and shot in unison. Not to mention being outside. It's bad enough on New Year's Eve

It's a recipe for disaster. You cannot convince me some yahoos will not shoot recklessly into the air. This idea is a sign of weakness, not strength. It will only prove we are cretins who just have to find a reason to shoot their guns.

It's a very poorly thought out idea with a lot of downside and almost no upside. An obvious gimmick that could have an effect opposite the one desired.

I remember reading a news story a year or two back about some yahoo discharging his muzzle loader into the air to unload it. It struck a young girl over a mile away,IIRC, killing her. I read that story to my kids to help reinforce the rules of safe, responsible firearm handling.

In regard to "firing wildly in the air" I just put the information as it appeared on my FB feed. I am fairly certain that the brainchild of this idea did not add "in a safe direction" to make it easier to market. Or just an immense amount of trust in everyone, everywhere following the 4 rules. I am all for raising awareness to protect our rights and fighting the good fight. But I just could not see the political benefit of something like this.

Coincidentally it is on a Saturday, a day when I try to use my backyard range anyway. I may not shoot that day just so I don't become involved in this mass collective action.

It will only take one accident for this to be better anti-gun publicity than pro-gun.

Seriously guys? It's a mass go-to-your-gun-range-or-other-shooting-spot-to-enjoy-the-sport-and-show-your-solidarity-with-fellow-citizens-you-may-not-know-are-shooters-or-support-RKBA day. Being 'literal-minded' used to be considered a sign of reduced intelligence before they put warning labels on everything, sheesh

It's a good idea (apparently somehow promoted unclearly), because why shouldn't we have pro-gun holiday? I thought it was clear enough, but maybe "Nationwide Range Day" would sound better? :scrutiny:

TCB

I assume some are aware of the connection with the date in History - April 19th, 1775? Lexington common, Capt. John Parker and all that.. "Do not fire unless fired upon" etc.,

While irresponsible shooting is not to be advised, encouraging historical awareness is to be :)

This is a just a test. If successful, the next even BIGGER idea will be a call for all gun owners to commit suicide using their gun in protest of oppressive gun laws. Those Antis sure are sneaky.

I will be in San Juan, Puerto Rico for a wedding on April 19. It certainly would be a bad idea there! :uhoh:

Seriously, I agree with barnbwt's rationale.

This idea is so mindless that I have to wonder if it's a provocation by the antigunners.

If you live in a city, discharging a firearm is likely to be dangerous to others (besides violating local ordinances), and if you're in the country, nobody else will hear it. So, what is the point? Just to make gun owners look like yahoos?

Gotta be a Anti-gun conspiracy to get all the people who do it inside city limits arrested and their gun confiscated.;)

As someone has already stated, if you go somewhere where it's legal to shoot, nobody will hear "the shot heard around the US".

Also, those places are normally full on Saturday at noon, anyway...
