We've had some ammo threads, but nothing I could tell that specifically answered this question:

I've only recently started getting serious about having a good amount of ammo on hand. I've actually had to purchase a decent sized steel container to secure this stash...and it keeps getting bigger. Plans to go to the range are often cancelled these days...

As a rule, I stick to the following guidelines when buying ammo for this reason:

1. Only buy calibers for weapons I own
2. Buy in bulk as often as possible, when I can find what I'm looking for, usually online where sellers offer deals for bulk purchases (I don't go to walmart, there's never ammo there anyways)
3. I don't flip anything...EVER.
4. I stock a healthy combination of target ammo and hot loads, usually from Underwood Ammo if they aren't easy calibers to find (10mm).

I did a quick tally this morning and found I was around 16,000. I don't know if this is a lot, so I'd be interested to see what you guys keep on reserve.

I have impressions of my inventory which I use when buying more ammunition. I tend to seperate my cache in terms of gross volumes between 22LR and centerfire. Centerfire exceeds 3,000 rounds and rimfire exceeds 15,000 rounds. If ammunition was more commonly available, I would be buying monthly. Have not been shooting much centerfire except for my 480 Ruger and 41 magnum (and that usage is fairly limited relative to normal shooting patterns).

I don't have that much 22LR or 22WMR, calibers for weapons I own. Good point though.

You have more on hand than I do, and a large part of my round count is 22LR. I do however keep quite a few reloading components on hand, so I'm not running out anytime soon.

I consider 5,000 rounds of centerfire a fairly substantial resource (unless you rattle off 500 rounds with your AR in a day) where as that much in 22LR is not a big deal. I don't consider 15,000 rounds of 22LR a big deal .... just consider, a couple cases or more of promo ammunition (got to have different brands), a couple cases of standard velocity, bricks of high priced 22 ammunition. It adds up fairly quickly.

What is big or small is entirely based on what you use and what you feel comfortable storing.

Thanks for the post, I had to laugh at number 1.

I use to just pick up a box or two of ammo (in the calibers I own) when I would go to the store but that was over a year ago that I could do that on a regular bases. I also reload for most of my center fire rounds but buy the components in bulk. I do search for my rimfire rounds online and tend to buy when I can find a good deal.

I believe she lost her ammunition that she stood in line for at Academy on the Rio Grande. You can wade the river in many places. :D

Someone forgot to turn off the water. It's true. I read it on the internet. :D

How much ammo do I have?! None. Sold all my firearms, and ammo. :neener:

I have more than 3000 in .22lr alone. I don't have a whole bunch of calibers or anything exotic... .22lr, .22WMR, 9mm, .45, .223/5.56 and 12ga. I will expand some day and probably be well over 20,000+ just because I like to not have to go to the store to shoot or not do a range trip at all because of ammo.

My basic rule of thumb has been I'd like to have about a years worth going once a month to the range. I don't find that unrealistic since I rarely mix the types of guns. I go to shoot shotguns, rifles or pistols exclusively.

It's interesting though because there are both extremes... people who tip the 20,000+ scale and other that a simple 1000 seems funny because they keep a box or two as that'll get them hunting and have food on the table.

Do components you haven't reloaded count?

If so, I'm over 6000, if not, Im under..

Wow a lot of people here don't seem to be as dedicated to shooting as others. I can't imagine only having 3000 rounds of ammo. Sorry but that's just true. I own a lot of ammo but it is sitting at the bottom of a lake too. There's just something about deep lakes and ammo on boats that just doesn't mix. Before my boating accident I had probably more than 15,000 rounds just in .22 ammo. And I have a lot of other guns to feed. I had about 3000 rounds just of 7.62 x 39. There's some well armed fish around my neck of the woods I guess. I suppose I should throw them in a rifle to go with all that ammo. Then there's .45, .44, .40, .380, 12 ga., 30.06, .223, .25, and .20 ga. to keep up with. I can't just let them all go hungry. What good is a gun without ammo? I have my fish hook ready in case I need to start looking for my ammo.

Seriously there are times I shoot more than 3000 rounds in a month. I've been out and shot up maybe $3000 worth of ammo in a day (I wasn't paying for that). A full auto can run through the stuff like water from a fire hose.

But 99% of my shooting is for practice. Practice is essential if you want to be good at something like shooting. I guess maybe everyone didn't grow up with shooting being a major source of entertainment like we did. I'm not trying to one up anyone here. I'm just suggesting that if you want to shoot really well it takes a lot of practice. I guess maybe that's why I've won my share of shooting competitions. I am NOT the best shooter around but I can generally hold my own with the good shooters. Maybe you don't care if you can shoot tiny little groups at 500 yards or small (nuisance) birds flying through the air or bats or running rats (tree or otherwise). But maybe you do. If you do want to be able to do those things it begins with practice.

I used to keep a few magazines full of 9mm premium defense ammo, and a box of it. So maybe 100 rounds.

When I was going shooting I'd buy a few boxes the day before or at the range.

Now I have a little under 3000 rounds of 9mm.

I sorta saw this ammo crisis coming and I purchased almost 2000 rounds of 9mm right before the election. I thought if Obama got elected there would be a run on ammo and if Romney got elected, well I got ammo for a decent price and eventually I'd shoot it - so it seemed like a good idea.

But after going through this ammo crisis I vowed "never again" so I am going to beef up my stock pile so that I definitely have enough ammo to get through an entire 4 year presidency of a gun grabber...

I happen to have a little over 1000 rounds of .22LR but that will all be gone when I take my kids to the next Appleseed shoot.

A couple deployments with no dependents...and it can add up. Also, I've slowly built up this stash over a period of 15 years. Only recently did I make a bunch of bulk purchases though.

Hard to answer because I don't know how to count reloading components.

Already loaded ammo: I'm down to about 3500 .22LR's; I like to keep that well north of 5000 but this shortage caught me by surprise. And I have maybe 2000 of everything else combined.

I have a few thousand jacketed rifle bullets, and enough lead to cast maybe 100000 pistol bullets. My limiting factor is reloadable brass, even though it can be reused (you can infer from that what you will about powder and primers.)

 So why haven't I been to the range all summer?
