How can I avoid more 22lr "brass kisses"?

Go to a aquarium supply store and buy one or two of the fish tank nets you'd use to skim or scoop out fish. Wire, bendable handle allows for maneuvering and customization. I have one screwed down to a piece of wood that I bend to catch spent brass and one that I can curve around the gun and actually get it to stay put. Makes for brass cleaning later on in the day much easier.

It sounds like the fabric you are trying to use to protect your neck is catching the brass and holding it against your skin. Have you tried shooting in just a loose fitting t-shirt so that if the brass hits you it continues to move instead of getting stuck in one place?

I've had lots of brass go down my shirt over the years (usually from another shooter) but as long as it keeps moving it tends to merely be unpleasant and not leave any marks.

Why don't you just wear a T-shirt or a turtleneck?

If turtlenecks aren't "cool" enough for you or it's hot out, I imagine a regular T-shirt would be loose enough that if it fell into your collar you could just quickly shake it out.

Try CCI-Minimags - they will probably have more punch than what you are using and the brass will fling in a different direction.

Cowboy hat?

or instead of a deflector, a brass catcher:

Made it in an hour of a piece of SS TIG rod and a mesh gear bag I had around.

I second the just wear a t-shirt notion. Never gotten a brass burn if they can just move along. Though getting a brass burn here or there is just part of shooting. In a high volume tac class (1.5K+ rounds rifle, and the same for pistol) I get brass'd multiple times, you just learn to deal with it. For that matter I've got three or four good scars from hot rifle brass over the years. Just adds character to your hide.

Burns? From a .22? Wow.

I don't like catching hot brass, but it's been years since I really did. I always wear a hat with a brim and shooting glasses to protect my face and eyes. I can't remember catching one on my neck, though. Guess I'd wear a bandana or shemagh if they were burning me there.

Had a 5.56 brass go down my sleeve to my elbow at Basic. That was a little bit exciting.

It's really not a hickey, it's really not a hcikey, it's really not a hickey....
Does the wife believe you yet?

Just for the record, I have seen .22lr high speed, W-W I think, glow in the dark on ejection from a Ruger 10-22
Best,
Rob.

Hey,

Thanks for all the response sorry of the delays in getting back.

So I got the A2 Brass Deflector from TC-Accessories...and it won't fit. I'm going to try again tonight (as I wasn't expecting it to arrive at my house before today...since I ordered it on Thursday from Brownells!), since I only briefly tried snapping it in after getting home from the weekend Passover/Easter/60th Birthday Road trip. I didn't want to break it in case I designed to return it. IIRC though it was simply too big to fit even with the plunger depressed.

The exact brand I use!

Once again another suggestion from my wife...and thus with merit. :) The chicks digs scars though isn't going to work well with her. Plus she is also left handed and I'd like to get her to shoot eventually, and scarring won't exactly encourage her granted I would have her start with the New Ruger Single Six, even with the hammer pull, to minimize the risk.

You know the more I think about it, perhaps that is the problem, but I think the first time I did fire with only a t-shirt, but I can't recall if I got some strikes. I think I did, BUT as mentioned nothing like happened when wearing the additional clothing.

Regardless I'm stubborn by nature and I'm not going to give up, at least not yet. If I can't fit the device in, I'm going to try the fish net idea since I can get that at Petco on the way home (or even in NYC...though don't let Bloomberg know or it might try to regulate it lol).

I think I'll give the hat idea a try too.

Odd! I feel for you. No matter what I do, I'll get a cut, blood blister, burn mark or something somewhere after a half day shooting if I'm doing any sort of dynamic movement. I can't stand wearing gloves, knee pads or elbow pads so I'll have some marks from the dynamic movement, also. I guess I'm also thick skinned or something because brass won't leave marks like that on me unless I were to hold it there for awhile...just bouncing off doesn't burn me.

I'm fortunate enough to be able to shoot on my own property. Unfortunately at this time of the year, I'll be bleeding on an arm or leg from clearing undergrowth before I even get to shooting.
