How can I remedy this problem?

Texas Moon:
4F is ok, you could put in a cap post (rake) or have 45 dragoon do it. there is a article about doing it. check out this video by cap and ball, and then clink the link in his descripton to the article

I was going to do a video on installing one, not sure if I have the nerve to drill into my engraved '51 frame
Not trying to take away from Mike's business, he does plenty more to a cap and ball revolver than just install a cap rake!

I believe Mike Bellevue changes the nipples on all of his guns with stainless or the brass/alloy nipples from Track of the Wolf.
I seem to recall that from one of his videos

I ordered some new mainsprings from VTI.
Installed them last evening. Honestly I can't tell the difference between them and the factory mainsprings. Still kinda mushy/soft on the first quarter inch of cocking.

I've tried the Slix Shot nipples. Do not like.
TRESO works great on all my other C&B's.

Was hoping for a quick and easy fix.
Sending them off to Goons may be the only remedy.

Wow! Some new light on an old subject. I can remember buying one of the first Zouaves to hit the market waaaaay back in the sixties. Huge hole in the nipple. Even coned out on the bottom. Blew that hammer to half cock with 60 grains of FFg. I put in an Ampco nipple for #11 caps and no problems ever again. Bought one of the "better" Indian made double shotguns. Same thing only they were supposed to use #11s. Huge hole. Blowback. Standard pinhole nipples fixed that.
Found some hotshot nipples, with blowout holes in the sides and they worked great and lasted a long time.
Not, and I repeat NOT, challenging anything on here so far. Just saying it didn't work out that way for me.
Read an interesting article a while back where, supposedly, a single action cap and ball revolver would occasionally fire two shots.....blowback would cock the hammer, rotate the cylinder and, being a sa, the hammer would drop on the second chamber. Don't know if I'd call b.s. or not but stranger things must have happened. I know I'd make my standard offer of "wow, I'd pay $25 to see that".

Yes. The factory nipples center hole is quite a bit greater in diameter than the TRESO nipples.
If the tresco flash hole is smaller (and from my experience these nipples will crust over with little provocation making ignition difficult) that is not the reason your hammer is being subjected to blow back... in my opinion. You've got an over pressure condition for some reason.

A weak hammer spring might cause the too... but boy... it could be... you might investigate that as well... Good luck with this... this is a very "dangerous" condition for you the shooter... glasses are a safety factor but not 100%.

Good luck with this...

aloha..

Yeah... I've a musketoon blew the nipple out... and no... this was from Dixie straight away... no replacement...

Aloha...

Have you slugged the bore?

Just thinking that if the bore is smaller than normal pressure would go up by trying to push an "oversize" ball through it.

I admit it's unlikely, just trying to be thorough.
