I would like to make a couple shotguns to hang on the wall. I would like to have a barrel of about 6-10 inches. I don’t want to break any laws so I wanted to know if I plug and weld the barrel on the receiver end and if I would need to remove the firing pin and weld the hole so it could not go back in.

Because of the "once a firearm always a firearm" logic of the ATF, I am pretty sure you are going to have to cut the receiver to "destroy" it.

Welded plugs don't satisfy them.

There's an ATF document out on how to do this but I can't seem to find it. Maybe someone else has it handy.

You'd probably be better off finding a dedicated display only model.

Here is the relevent passage from ATF:
Section 2.5 Removal of firearms from the scope of the NFA by modification/elimination of components.

Firearms, except machineguns and silencers, that are subject to the NFA fall within the various definitions due to specific features. If the particular feature that causes a firearm to be regulated by the NFA is eliminated or modified, the resulting weapon is no longer an NFA weapon.
For example, a shotgun with a barrel length of 15 inches is an NFA weapon. If the 15- inch barrel is removed and disposed of, the remaining firearm is not subject to the NFA because it has no barrel.
Likewise, if the 15 inch barrel is modified by permanently attaching an extension such that the barrel length is at least 18 inches and the overall length of the weapon is at least 26 inches, the modified firearm is not subject to the NFA. NOTE: an acceptable method for permanently installing a barrel extension is by gas or electric steel seam welding or the use of high temperature silver solder having a flow point of 1100 degrees Fahrenheit.

Unfortunately if the barrel is less than 18 inches or overall length less then 26 inches it is an NFA item no matter what you do to disable it.

There is another description out there somewhere about how to "destroy" a firearm.

That involves cutting the receiver somehow. Once it's not a firearm anymore you can put short barrels or whatever you want on the thing.

It's a pretty drastic process, not just welding plugs in but I can't find the writeup on it.

Ok thanks for the info. If anyone knows of any replica's not real let me know thanks.alot less work and don't have to worry about any troubles with breaking any laws.

I know I've seen uzi rifles with short dummy "display barrels"

Maybe a 14 inch 870 dummy barrel that was never intended to be a barrel and could not be converted to one would bne in line here./

Here, $30 and you can shoot 6mm plastic bbs out of it for fun too.

If you were thinking more "Mad Maxx" there's this http://www.cheap-airsoft-gun.com/double-barrel-shotgun.html

So what if you have a shotgun receiver that you attach a solid piece of steel in the shape of a barrel to?
