Hello all,

Noobie here looking for advice.

I'm interesting in picking up an AR 15 (5.56) but I live in NY and have to conform to their assinine AWB laws.

I've been researching a little but have some questions.

Which twist should I get , ie 1-7, 1-8, 1-9,..... 1-7 allows me to shoot the most types of rounds right?

I've read that if I use pre-ban 30 rd mags than i'm ok, is this right? If so, where can I get them?

I'd like to keep the gun total < $1000 if possible.

I'll primarily just be using this at the range, home defense (along with my 12ga) and just in case the SHTF.

All recommendations welcomed. Thanks!

From what I understand and givin that my son was able to get his DPMS M4 out of there without going to jail I would say you need a preban lower as well as preban mags if you intend to go over 10 rds. NYS is not a friendly EBR state.

If you have a post-1994 lower, it needs to be AWB compliant (no collapsing stock, no bayonet lug). If it's pre-1994, it can have all the evil features. Mags holding more than 10 rounds are OK if they are pre-1994.

I bought a rra ar15 during the federal ban, around 2001,at this time hi cap mags were still legal but new ones couldnt be made, but they could still be shipped to n.y. ban passed in 2004,march 2005 nys adopted the federal ban. are my hi cap mags still legal in my gun that has postban features,no lug, fake flash hider, fixed stock, but was able to use hi cap mags that i was able to buy during the federal ban? cunfusing issue

Thanks for the info!

Btw, would it be illegal for me to own 30 round magazines if I never put them or used them in the rifle?

Yup

NYS Penal Law Section 265.02 (8)
"A person is guilty of Criminal Possession of a Weapon in the 3rd deg.(Class D Felony) when: Such person possesses a large capacity ammunition feeding device".

Large capacity ammo feeding device is defined in 265.00 as a magazine manufactured after 10/13/94 that has a capacity of more than 10 rounds.

So yes, unless they're pre NY ban, just possession is a felony.

I lived in NY for most of my life and they are not gun friendly at all, especially an EBR. Their legislature has been dominated by the liberal elite for decades. I expect things will only get worse.
I retired to a much more gun friendly state.
